[diesel_mercedes] Re : Current thoughts for ATF for w126 / w123??

I don't rememberhow much it took ~ what I do is buy a case as sooner or later I know I'll use Dexron .

Fill until it's at the high mark on the dipstick then start it up and add slowly until the ATF level *just* touches the tip of the dipstick , adding s l o w l y as a 1/2 pint is a LOT in a slushbox and over filling will cause leaks .

Once it's up to the tip of the dipstick , go drive it for 30 minutes or more then re check on a perfectly level bit of gound as ATF expands 10 % or so as it heats up .

I am sure it is printed somewhere (owners manual, Haynes, etc). But, you can always drain into 1 or 2 gallon jugs and see how much came out - then put the same amount of new fluid back in, and  check the dipstick to see what you need to add.

There's a popular school of thought that if the trans was not maintained, you'll kill it by changing all the fluid. That group leaves the TC fluid in, on some cars is almost half.
