Thanks Nate. Hubby doesn't want a fixer upper next time, so we will likely find one that has been garaged and lovingly cared for by an MBCA member or something. Neither of us are mechanically inclined, so we will have our resident diesel head/old Mercedes mechanic check out any 300TD wagon we find just to ensure the vehicle is in god shape. I know the SLS is sometimes worn out in the old wagons. Anything else to look out for besides rust? Man, these W123s are wicked comfy for road trips. Is that because they were designed for "luxury" or??? Anyhow,. have to wait til next year when the Toyota is paid off to look at 300TDs.
In the meantime, we are going to try biodiesel on our 300D. I know we have to change some hoses to do that. Anything else to change out before running biodiesel?

We are definitely sold on the idea of getting a W123 Wagon in the future(gonna trade in our Toyota Rav4 once it is paid off in April of next year and we find a good 300TD wagon). I drive the Rav4 3 hours and am stiff for hours, drive the 300D for 7 hours and get out as if I just got in. We journeyed from Silicon Valley area (Fremont) of California, up thru Dunsmuir (CA) to Bend (OR), thru Eastern Oregon & Washington up to a friend's place 40 minutes north of Wenatchee (WA), then back down, thru the Columbia River Gorge to Portland (OR) for a visit with my daughter and her Hubby, back to Dunsmuir, then home. No pics on Portland, as it was super rainy but good food was had by all and everyone but me (designated driver) had good beer. BTW, Dunsmuir has amazing gourmet food and excellent microbrews at the Dunsmuir Brewery an Pub. The German Dog (Levi) loves his German car as much as we do. Mercedes sure does know how to make an awesome road trip vehicle. Anyone in the Bay Area want to rent me their 300TD for a return trip in September? Pics are under album Mary's Road Trip 2011. I get cold easily, so I am wearing about 3 layers of clothing:)

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Weekend mileage
One thing that most ' mechanics ' either don't know or ignore , is the tendency for rusty silt to settle in the deeper corners of the water jacket & solidify , making them difficult to remove ~ the citric acid flush is very good in this regard *but* one still needs some thermal cycles combined with hard running to get them all to loosen up and fall into the coolant mix .
This is why all my posts about cleaning up the cars I have , go on and on and on and......
When I say it's clean , _it's_clean_ , make no mistake but it takes a long time and many flushes & re fills to do the job 100 % .
Better to not defer cooling system mtce. in the first place .
We'll get that sorted out soon as the dark coolant is abrasive so I want it out before it causes me more work.

I was wondering that too .
I'm not sure , I think I jotted down the miles at the overhaul point but I more care about the routine mtce. and fuel mileage issues .

[diesel_mercedes] Weekend mileage
[diesel_mercedes] Re: Mary's Road Trip
How did we manage to miss each other Max? Glad your trip was great as well. Hope you missed the crazy storm we drove thru in the Gorge last Weds (40-60 mph gusts with hail so bad you couldn't see more than 1 ft in front of you). Amazing how well these cars handle under ALL weather conditions:)

How many miles have been racked up since the rebuild? Maybe it's finally getting broken in....
