[diesel_mercedes] Electrical Connections

Just so max ! .

Sand paper, even Crocus Cloth , is FAR too abrasive and will ALWAYS cause worse troubles down the road , much more so in cars that sit a lot like yours .

Polish anything electrical .

This takes time and effort but returns 40 + year old contacts and connectors to like new connectivity .

Yea, I thought sandpaper was maybe not that good. Anyway the pins and their holes would be hard to clean with out some kind of chemical and maybe a cotton swab. Both cars are almost parked for winter now. Max

Likely just a bad connection somewhere in the glow plug connection chain. A little sandpaper on the contact surfaces of the wires and plugs is your friend here. If the light came on after you pulled them and reinstalled them then it is likely that you improved the bad contact just by rubbing the contacting surfaced against each other. Clean contact surfaces are everything in these systems.

For what it's worth, I put my custom adapters in my OM616 jeep engine and they work a treat. But they use GM glow plugs now instead of Bosch ones. But 4 seconds and they are warm enough to start.

How long does it take to take out a set of injectors? I've had a starting deal(not really a problem) on my 240 auto, sometimes when I turn the key to glo, the glo light wont come on. I've found out no light, no glo, no start unless warm. I had no idea what to do, but for some reason I popped the lid off the glo junction deal under the hood, looked at it for a while, then popped off the two 4 plug plugs, looked at them for a while, put them back on, tried the key, saw the light was on and instant start. This car sits around most of the time. Any suggestions? max

[diesel_mercedes] Cold Starting

They're in there _really_ tight ~ I have to use my longest 1/2" drive  flex handle (misnomer : breaker bar) and a 12" tube on the end of it to break 'em loose .

Plus you have to carefully remove the steel injector feed pipes and not cross thread 'em when you re install .

Then there's the *special* 27MM (I think) 1/2" drive injector socket so you don't bend/ snap off the tiny return hose nipples...

The easiest thing to do is : blow hot air into the air intake using a blow dryer....

Depending on what year model your 240D is , you can remove the harness plug from the glow plug relay then use an analog multi - meter to check the resistance and continuity of each glow plug separately .

They're easy to replace once you remove the steel injector pipes .

Lots of tiny 7MM nuts and flat washers to drop and lose plus you *must* support the wire end when you loosen/tighten them else they'll simply twist off and spoil your day.....

I'm on the tower computer so I don't have a nice photograph of my simple Farm Fix .

Winter is about on us , it's time once again to order in a new rubber rockerbox gasket and adjust the valves , add some White Bottle Diesel Kleen from Power Service or just dump in a bottle of DIESEL 911 , HOT change the oil and filter to 5W~ whatever fully synthetic oils , leave that in for the Winter ..
