[diesel_mercedes] Re: Neutral safety switch and shifter jamming.

I had the non-starting issue with my 84 300sd. It would not start about 5% of the time, especially when engine had run for a while. I was able to bypass the NSS by directly jumping the starter (people have writen about this beforehere). ALso there was always a click when it failed to start. Eventually it started only when I hit the starter with a wrench before starting. It pointed to the starter, and after replacing it about 2 weeks ago...no problem so far. ALthough I don't like that I had to use a NAPA starter, but the remanufactured one was a Bosch. Hope it lasts a while.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Neutral safety switch and shifter jamming.

What model car is it? New shift bushings will clear up a multitude of issues. Neutral switches are known to fail, but bushings might be the only problem.

We did get rear ended last year big time and the shifter is a little funny. I got her to start once when it happened to me by fiddling with the shift knob. That is why I think it is the switch but then again we can all be fooled. LR

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Glow plug question

If it leaks you screwed something up, or you got a gasket with a hole in it. I never replace mine unless they need it and they last almost forever.. On my Ponton, the valve cover, where it meets the gasket in one place was soooo sharp I thought it could cut tru the gasket. Might check that. Most likely it fell out of place when you had the cover upside down or you clamped a vacuum line in there. Do it again, go slow , be really careful and use some grease on the gasket for sealing and be sure to wipe the head super clean. Max

DEFINITELY stay away from Autolites.

autohausaz.com has the Bosch's for less:

Shipping is free if you can get the order over $50, so have them add a fuel or oil filter.

"Best" are the Monarks.  (Word has it that the Bosch's are now made in India or some such place, and the quality has taken a dive.)  Bergsma's outfit sells them for $12.50 a pop, or the kit of five plugs with reamer for about $90.  You can probably find them for less on amazon.com.

https://mercedessource.com/store/monark-series-style-glow-plug

I've never used the reamer, so, can't really comment on it.  Seems to me that if you can get the old plugs out, you've then done all the reaming needed; no need to be reamed any further....

I've removed and re-installed countless MB cam/valve cover gaskets over the last 30-years.  Can't think of any "trick" to it.  Just need to make sure the bottom edge of the cover is well seated in the gasket, and use even torques on the bolts.

There's supposed to be a rubber bumper that keeps the upper A-arm from banging into the sub-frame when the limit of travel is reached.  Maybe this bumper is gone...?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Neutral safety switch and shifter jamming.

It sounds like the shifter bushings are worn out. Take a peek at the
bushings as well as the neutral safety switch, as maybe it's off too.
Some people have trouble starting in Park with worn bushings, as the
neutral safety switch isn't registering that it's in park, though when
in neutral it seems to line up OK.
