Re: [diesel_mercedes] replacing fuel lines on the 300sdl

New,

What usually goes bad are the fuel return lines.  There are five or so.  When I replaced one, enough fuel return line to do all of them was less than $10 at a MB dealer.  (Still pretty expensive for 2 1/2 feet or so of small tubing.)

Doing it is no big deal - do one at a time - remove the old one - cut a matching one from the new tubing - install - repeat.  There are no clamps to fiddle with - just slide the old tubing off and slide on the new tubing.

Other people have advised not to substitute another type of tubing - get the real thing from MB.

[diesel_mercedes] CARmageddon & Etc.

So ;

It turned out to be a big bust apart from downtown Los Angeles Friday right after work .

We'll see if they get the I-405 Fwy. open in time for rush hour to - morrow .

I took SWMBO out to run errands in the '84/85 Euro 300TD to - day , as always it lit right off and ran *perfectly* , it's amazing how silky smooth this one's engine runs .

Good thing I gave it to her as it'd make a dandy Shop Truck , right after I blacked out the side & rear windows..... .

It's too nice for that tho' .

The AC has failed yet again , I think I'll be replacing all the various AC hoses before trying to re charge it again .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Recommended Coolant & Flush

LOL , thanx ! .

True , buying old long dormant abandoned klunkers has forced me to learn more about cooling systems than I ever thought I would , being an Air Cooled VW Mechanic for many years .

I've covered it all in excruciating detail , just look up " Citric Acid Flush " , this being the Mercedes Factory approved method .

Read it ALL before you begin & follow the warnings & directions *EXACTLY* or you'll have troubles with it later on .

DO NOT use too much Citric Acid and DO NOT try to mix it in the cooling system . BT , DT , I clogged my radiator on the road and had to remove it in a gas station & clean it slowly by hand , lucky for me it didn't kill the engine from overheating when it clogged .

_YOU_ can do a better job @ home than any shop will ever do because it takes time & effort to do it right .

[diesel_mercedes] Parallel Condenser - WAS Re: AC Compressor Failure

Well ;

The '82 240D I bought over 10 years ago , is still blowing ice cold AC and I think I've maybe added one can of R-12 in that entire time so stock works great *if* it's in good condition .

That being said , using a larger condenser than original has long been an easy way to increase AC's efficiency .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Shortbed Pickup Wanted

Thanx Brian ;

I'm stuck on the i6 thing , along with the full size shortbed aspect .

I've had Japanese ' crackerjack ' pickups , they were great and our City Fleet has scads of S-10 variants from the very first to the current crop , all are very good , just not for me .

I know what I need & like , I've tried the rest , all were pretty darn good but....

I just passed up a sweet running S-10 with the V6 , it was the " pimp my ride " truck with skulls motif . the stupid girl who allowed those fools to do it, took off and sold the pimp wheels and stereo gear then wanted only $500 for the truck itself . I'd be embarrassed to be seen in it until I'd primed over the weird new paint but as a Work Truck for $500 , it couldn't be beat .

If anyone wants the l o n g deal on my old '76 GMC , now is the time !

It runs & drives , has mostly new chassis parts , could use a valve job but doesn't smoke nor leak oil .

$1,500 , I hope to donate it this Saturday if I can talk Tom into driving me home .

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] recommended coolant & flush

Hello All

My 1978 300D is running hot, about 220 degrees Fahrenheit, at high speed on a very hot day. I have replaced the thermostat & radiator cap. This helped a little, but not enough.

Is there a recommended antifreeze and radiator flushes? I have read that the cooling system is sensitive to pH.

thank you
Rodger
