1980 300TD  Stalk was broke but I could set  using the broken off stalk but on hills it would dump then it started to dump on flats.  Now it won't work.  What do you check first?  Lawrence Rhodes

[diesel_mercedes] Road Trip 240D

Interesting Max ;

Another guy is traveling in his 240D manual right now and he told me his is fine @ 75 MPH .

When I travel in out 240D automatic , I keep it at 60 MPH as the engine really doesn't like being over speeded .

I get 30 + MPG fully loaded AC always on maximum .

Ooops ~ gotta run , BREAKFAST TIME ! . =8-) .

Just got back from a 900 mile road trip. Bummer I only had 2 days, quick trip. My 240 4spd. ran well. AC worked fine the whole trip. This car is super low geared, no tach. I ran it very hard, drove as fast as I could. First day driving tru central Washington and then tru the Coulmbia River Gorge there was a blistering headwind, some times it almost blew the car off the road. I only got 26mpg, which giving the conditions I guess that was good.My speedometer reads 5mph over what I am actually going(proper sized tires) but the odo works perfect, I checked it several times with mile markers.?????????????? My girlfriend is perfect, says nothing, just sits on the dash and jiggles her butt and boobs while I drive. I need to change coolant next. Is there any drain plugs to help get everything out. Is there a procedure? It started everyttime with the new crappy Shucks starter. I checked with Napa and they claim to have a brand new starter for $116 and they even give a lifetime. When this one fails that will be my next. 240's are too low geared for long trips on freeways. Both my cars have enough power to go fast but especially the 4spd is just to low geared. Great for where I live, in mountains,  with the nearest freeway 100 miles away, but trying to cruise at 70, too fast, hard to go slower when you want to get someplace. I bet my next tank of fuel with driving slow will be in the 30's. It will take a couple of weeks to run it tru. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Fungus In Your Fuel

Thoughts ? HELL YES ! .

Don't patronize the filling station on Lake Av. and Union Street in Pasadena , Ca. ! .

As long as there's no black crud in the bottom of your clear platic primary fuel filter , adding 8 oz. of Startron once a year is a very good prophylactic measure .

Good plan. I wonder if this is some failing of the particular retailer
that grows this fungus. Old, poorly maintained tank or some such.
Not that I have a choice here, but if you aren't having this problem,
being wary of strange retailers might be indicated.

Any thoughts, anybody?

[diesel_mercedes] STARTRON Application

That sounds right to me ~ .

Or , you could just drive like I do , the violent sloshing about will guarantee mixing before the recirculatinf fuel injection system can do it =8-) .

We lost a tire yesterday , luckily we'd stopped to P. and stretch the  old legs and spotted it so I was able to change it in a nice parking lot between rain storms , nothing got wet / dirty =8-) .

Of course we're at the border between Colorado and Kansas sans a spare tire with two iffy tires on the ground and a delaminated & flat spare....

Press on regardless ! .

It's probably a good idea to put in the 8 ounces BEFORE you fill up the tank so that it gets mixed in with the fuel. That way when the fuel fills the sender cylinder (through that little hole at the bottom), it will take the startron with it. Once the tank is full and the sending cylinder is full there is not so much likelihood that the stuff will enter the cylinder with the fuel since the fuel in the cylinder will be leaving and not entering until the next fill up. If the fungus likes to hide in there then this may be a good idea.

Just a thought.

It kills it and turns *most* of the fungus (depending on how bad your individual car is) into incredibly fine particles that will flow right through your fuel filters and the rest of the fuel system too with out damaging it .

You might consider adding 8 + ounces to a fully filled tank , driving it a while then parking it a few days so it can do it's thing .

If you're still unsure , run the tank to the low level light comes on then change the clean intake screen _only_ fill it up and see what happens .

No need / point to mindlessly change the secondary filer .

-Nate

AHA! I gave it the recommended dose with a full tank but it's still
acting up. Of course it could take us a month to use up a full tank,
still I would have thought it would have helped by now.

Does it actually dissolve the stuff, or just kill it? I need to change
the filters again but I hate to make a daily chore of it, could get
expensive. Any good way to tell if the stuff is dead? or just change
the filters and take your chances.

I thought
the speedo and the odo ran off the same gear, no?  My 82
has a
drain plug low center below the
manifolds.  Fairly easy to get to.  I
plumbed the coolant heater into it.
Handy for flushing having a hose attached
there.  I was able to flush it
out
backwards, bottom -up, as it were.

Apparently a site like Yahoo.com is far too big to run off of one server. There are lots of Yahoo servers with the address something.yimg.com.
