Re: [diesel_mercedes] advice

My '83 300SD W126 got anywhere from 25 to 30MPG.  It's more aerodynamic than the W123, less drag = more MPG.  I've never owned a W123 Turbo Diesel, but I've owned 5 NA models.

Box vs Curves = aerodynamically superior = air flow = more mpg

Well, they have the same motor and trans so what's left…

Wheelbase (W123/W126): 2795mm/2935mm

Overall length (W123/W126): 4848mm/5020mm

Curb weight (W123/W126 diesels): 1625kg/1640kg

Damn near a push if you ask me.

As I recall, the SD get 1 or 2 mpg more than a D due to the more aerodynamically sound body. The w123 300D diesel is boxy and only achieves (average) 25 mpg.

That probably depends on the usage. eg: around town or over the road.  Our SD which was regularly driven 100mi/day commuting on Parkways was running close to 30mpg.  I never bothered to check the D.  Personally I like the feel of the 300D slightly better, my wife likes the SD.  Other than monitoring the fuel mileage as a sign of potential maintenance problems, I always looked at the mileage difference as  inconsequential.

Do you have a refinery in your back yard?   They don't waste gas, but they make exceedingly good use of a lot of it. SEL stands for Super Expensive Long.  I just bought an '87 560SEL in good condition that needed about a $1,000 worth of work  for $1,250.  This car spent all but the last three years of its life in a heated garage.  I have all the repair tickets since then and I was still hesitant.  The 5.6 liter engine translates to roughly the equivalent of a 350 cube chevy.   But with the Mercedes you get double overhead cams, an appetite for high test and a relatively complicated car.  Super nice when it all works, but unless you plan on working on it yourself it can get expensive fast.  As the price of fuel goes up the price of cars like this tends to go down.  I operate on the premise that if you have a car you will be paying someone.  Take your pick between the bank, the mechanic, or the gas station.

Are you talking about the Subaru 360's with the little 360cc 2 stroke 2 cylinder rear engine?  I had a neighbor who had many different ones including a sedan, side gate pickup truck and a minivan.  I could always tell when one was motoring around the neighborhood.

Looking for some advice. I know this off topic and forum but I thought I would still ask, I was looking at an sel model mercedez, but does anyone know if they are economical or if they waste alot of gas. I work sales and collextions so economical the better, but I heard that everytime you press down on that pedal you see the gas gauge drop, Any opinions?
