Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rear Main Oil Seal leak

No way!!

There are two steel pins, one each in the engine block and the other in the aluminum bottom engine cover (most call this part the "oil pan") where the seal is located.  These pins go about half-way into the two seal halves.  They are there specifically to keep the seal from rotating.  SO, not only does the transmission and flex plate need to be removed, but this aluminum cover needs to be pulled, and the crank mains loosened to allow the crankshaft to drop enough for the upper seal half to be popped out.  AND, the engine must be unbolted from the mounts and lifted up enough to allow the aluminum cover to clear the frame member so as to get access to the mains.

Maybe not thousands in labor, but, well over $1000, anyway.

Believe me, BTDT, shoulda taken photos and posted them so's I could write the book, etc....

(And that was on a W116, which has more room than a W123!)

Huh really?  I'll check around.  I imagined it to cost in the thousands.  I can always trade food for labor...I know a very trusted mechanic that is willing to barter, or he used (no not Kevin).

I thought of asking the muffler guy if the kids that work there are competent enough to do the job and ambitious enough to want the extra $ and if he'd be nice enough to allow them to use his lift.

All I know is Kevin is chomping at the bit to go down to the beach this weekend before the ten weeks of hell start with summer camp.  IF the guys get the building done they are working on now, then they get Friday off...they traded Memorial Day, even though Kevin is a Veteran, he had no problem with giving up that day.  IF he gets Friday off we're headed out before the rooster crows to get through Houston before traffic. Should put us on the beach before noon!  Be back home the next night before most people show up for the weekend.  I plan to have 4 full 5 qt jugs of oil with us.  WM is down there so it's not like we'll be stranded.  If he doesn't get this Friday off we'll wait till he gets a full week off when summer camp ends.  Maybe by then I can have it fixed.

No, not another fried engine.  All's well now.  I do keep (usually) one FULL 5qt jug in the trunk, along with the jug I'm using from.  Not worth it to me to buy in quarts, I go through waaay too much.  And yes, it is the cheapo stuff...WM brand 20/50w.

[diesel_mercedes] 2 1984 mercedes 300D for sale

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/3004522416.html

These are not mine, they're my brother's so please respond to the C-listing not to me.
I apologize for any breach of listiquette, but I know how much he's hating having to sell them, and how much he'd like to see them to a good home. He has put an enormous amount of time, effort, and gearhead love into these, and having them go for scrap or to a nitwit would be tragic.
'Nuff said, I'm an Alfa and K-bike guy, so what do I know?

2 1984 mercedes 300D - 3000$ obo (monroeville)

Car 1- Dark blue with palomino interior.about 180k on motor and 210k on body.Paint on hood is losing its clearcoat like a shedding dog....
Car 2- Anthracite grey with palomino interior...also losing its clearcoat.

With these vehicles I have an inordinate amount of parts, both new and used.I am a junkyard dog, so when I go to one and find parts worth having I tend to get them.Annoys the hell out of my wife....lol....I also have some new parts as well.

I am selling because we have a second baby on the way and she(my wife) wants a wagon instead.Preferrably a subaru, so I have to sell my cars to get her what she wants.
I am looking to get 4000$ OBO for both cars, a good spare engine and LOTS of spare parts.I might consider a trade for something, try me.I am also open to reasonable counter-offer.

153 miles , 18.4 MPG ~ SWMBO driving most of it , the car seems to be running fine , the AC blows ice cubes .

At least I lucked into some branded $4.06 Diesel Fuel in Gardena and squeezed in as much as I could .

Still having some black crud in the intake screen , i'm adding Star Tron to each and every fillup .

I need to buy more Startron right away before I run out .

So far , every time I've encountered this it's been the Monovalve .

Some Partshaus' sell the guts part separately for less than 1/2 price .
Brian posted some pix of how to do it and what to look for (tiny rips in the rubber membrane part) .

You don't even have to drain the coolant ! .

Just do it when the engine is stone cold .

Ouch ~

Here it it the following week , I hope I'm not soon to read about another fried engine .

Me , I'da stopped somewheres along the line and bought more oil , even if just the cheapo 40W stuff , topped it up and tossed several more quarts in the Boot .

Tom and I used most of a case of oil getting my new Shop Truck with " Rebuilt engine ! new Pistons ! " back from Houston to L.A......

Oil & coolant are the life bloods of any engine , more important than fuel .

" AC Pod " ? do you mean a vacuum actuator under the dashboard ? .

I think either one of those is leaky or maybe it's relay as the center vents are help open by a tire pressure gauge , at least it _was_ ~ the other day I got in and noticed the gauge was *gone* .

Want to polish & wax my Coupe ? I'll pay you and provide materiels & cold drinks....

I just cannot do that any more =8-( .

Yabbutt ;

The deal is :

When it works , it works , nice and cool inside , as I filled it with R-12 ($$ !) I'm loathe to fool with it .

I already replaced the pushbutton unit and Monovalve plus I *think* the Auxiliary Water Pump....

I know I replaced the radiator way back when first I bought the car and it was chugging to a halt with clogged fuel screens , remember / . I posted all the fun I had back then as i went through it .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Becker Fun

Although it might seen the reason is because the Germans are still pi$$ed off about loosing The War , it isn't ~ it's because Teutonic Technology is different and they really did want you to have a nice Radio in your new Mercedes Benz as long as you owned it .

Look at it this way : remember in college when you bought a $2,200 Datsun and had a $3,500 stereo installed ? .

That top grade stereo is long junk but your 30 year old Becker is still paying music just fine and if you took it in for it's decade required service , the tape deck would still play your crispy old Meatloaf tapes too....

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Becker Fun

Before I managed to loose my brand new portable CD player , I had a similar issue ~

It turned out that most Cassette Adapters have the wire coming out the narrow back edge of the " Cassette " and the Becker is *so* close tolerance , it drags when the " Cassette " falls into place and the Becker thinks there's a problem with the cassette and ejects it ~ I went back to different .99 Cent stores and found some adapters have two slots you can work the wire through so it comes out the top of the " Cassette " and others had tiny # 0 Phillips screws so you can open it up and route the wire out the top.....

Work at it but *gently* , the Becker is a finely crafted bit of German Technology .

I suppose your could just schlepp on down to the $uper $pendy Electronic$ Store & drop $20 on a name brand Cassette Adapter but I'm far to stubborn/thrifty/cheap to do it thata way .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Any Tips for removing factory undercoating ?

Some more:

#3  Eastwood sells a rubberized undercoating remover. It works pretty good. What I did was sprayed down the full undercarraige of the car with the undercoating remover (wear a respirator, this stuff stinks). Then used a green scrubby and went over everything loosening up the undercoating. It makes a royal mess but works great. I used my pressure washer to clean it all up. That got about 99% of the undercoating off of my car. I then went over every square inch of the undercarraige with wax and greese remover which cleaned everything up nice but may have been overkill.

Here are a couple of posts from other forums that might work:

#1  I have had good results using a heat gun or propane torch and a paint scraper. Heat the undercoating until the scraper gets to metal and the undercoating comes off fairly easy. If you use a torch be careful to keep moving it, and keep a wet rag handy.

#2  The previous owner of my '40 Buick had coated the outside of the gas tank with an "undercoating" type stuff. I am not sure what it was, but it did not do a good job at sealing the tank from leaking like he expected. Anyway, my first attempt at removing it was with a grinder and wire brush. That was a 90% failure. I then tried heating it with a torch and scraping it off. (Yes I purged the tank first). That made an even bigger mess . So in a last resort I asked the old guy at the hardware store. He suggested that I try floor adhesive stripper. Specifically the stuff that works on mastic. It worked like a charm. I brushed it on, let it set for a while, scraped it off with a putty knife and wiped it with acetone. Be warned, it will take the paint off too. Good luck.

I have been using the grab what you can with needle nose and twist. This gets a tiny peice at a time. looking to speed the process.

Need some passenger rocker repair.
