Re: [diesel_mercedes] Srarter Help

Forgot about the NSS. Not familiar with automatics. I did replace this once and something did not work out so I bypassed it, but its been so long I cant remember. Max

Max ;

I'm about to go read ll the other replies but 90 + of the time it's the starter's solenoid , Bosch solenoids cannot be rebuilt and all other brands except Echlin are worthless because they fail soon .

Sometimes the electrical portion of the ignition switch fails , if the white plastic part turns yellow it's kaputi , get rid of it before it strands you .
To test , find the primary electrical connection block on the inner right fender  it's have (IIRC) three fairly heavy wires going across it , one is unfused battery and the other fat red one is the starter actuation wire ~ bridge these two with an unbent paper clip , making sure the tranny's in park and the park brake is set ~ if the starter *instantly* begins to crank , I'd look at the ignition switch or neutral safety switch next .

If there's a little pause before the starter begins to crank , the solenoid is dead , either pony up serious $ for a Bosch branded rebuilt starter (they never re use solenoids)  or buy a Bosch or Echlin (Echlin @ NAPA) solenoid and install it .

I assume you have already tested for loose shifter linkage bushings by holding the key in the start position and s-l-o-w-l-y moving the shifter from Park through all it's positions....

OK, after having my spare 240 with the auto for a long time and not driving it much and it never failed, well, its been failing. The latest thing is it wont start. When I turn the key nothing, zip, no click no nothing. I checked the voltage it seems fine. What do I do? I've had several starters go out and I get plenty of notice. Between getting  firewood, rototilling, lawn mowing, finishing my house, cleaning out my shop so I can finish my house, I dont have time for this, good thing its my #3 car, but I do like to keep it running. I really need to sell it. Any advice? Max
