[diesel_mercedes] Re: 83 300SD Instrument Cluster (Phase 1)
Good work ! .
I read about the DIY odometer fix many here have done , took my speedo ever so carefully apart over a clean white towel , got about 2/3 into it and stopped , cleaned everything *hospital* clean & buttoned it back up , I could then see everything just fine so I paid a speedo guy $150 to fix the odometer , it's still working fine years later .
I forget who sells those tiny plastic gears , maybe Nate R.knows , I don't see how your could hurt it much by trying .
The oil pressure gauge *must* be on zero with the key on and engine not started , if not , it's prolly a bad ground in the cluster , might be the signal wire from the oil pressure switch is grounded by a bare spot but since the cluster has been fooled with by the DPO , I'd chase bad grounds there first .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Back Seat Cushion Removal, 123 coupe
Bottom leading edge has two plastic tabs , gently pull them forward and the seat cushion will pop loose , allowing you to draw it forward a bit then lift it out .
Remember to vacuum up all the old green glow in the dark french fires and maybe use some wipes to clean everything before to attack the seat , this way it'll all be nice and dry and not stink when you re assemble it .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1982 240D cluched seized?
I don't know what a ' seized up clutch ' is.......
If it hadn't been sitting for TWO YEARS , you could start it up and see how the engine runs then start it in first gear to at least see if it's drivable , a good GearHead could drive it through all four gears & ascertain the tranny wasn't blown up .
I'd say this is a $250 Pig-In-A-Poke deal , if you're Mechanically inclined and don't mind dumping $1,000 & much skin into it , go for it .
Otherwise , buy the next $1,000 that pops up , they're all over the place .
_BEWARE_THE_"CHEAP_MERCEDES_" !!!!!!!!
It'll be the very most expen$ive car you ever own .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 83 300SD Instrument Cluster (Phase 1)
It basically doesn't move...
When the cluster is unhooked, the guage (in both clusters) read "0"
When all plugged in, as soon as the key is on (maybe even without the key...gotta check) it's as high as it goes. All the time. :(

Max is right, only the height will change the speedo reading, 205/60 will read differently than 205/70.

Probably the more likely diagnosis is that the clutch disk has "grown" to the flywheel and pressure plate and won't release. I have an 850 Fiat with that problem now. The cure is to do the usual clutch job, but it is complicated by the necessity of prying the pieces apart. It will of course require replacement of the clutch disc and any other necessary parts. It's an easy job on a rear engined Fiat where the engine comes out in about 1/2 hour. Not so easy on a Mercedes.Had a badly worn clutch come apart and hook one of the steel
leaves on the plate with the housing, locked it up so it would not disengage. Cant remember which vehicle it was on but was likely either a 51 chev or a 54 ford many years ago.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 83 300SD Instrument Cluster (Phase 1)
My oil pressure is always pegged on my 240d and 300d. It does drop when the engine is off. Does yours stay high when the engine isn't running?
When I got Betty, I knew the odometer wasn't working. When I drove her home after picking her up, it was dark and torrential rain (not common in these dry parts) and so I discovered that the left half of the cluster was too dark to see and the left turn signal light was out.
I've since noticed that the oil pressure gauge always reads the highest and never moves. The clock doesn't work (ok, who cares) and the tach jiggles. And the kicker is that the speedo only goes up to 85MPH (as in, that's the highest mark that's on the gauge face). All other warning lights seem to be just fine.
Luckily the PO included what was theoretically the original cluster and today I dug into some troubleshooting and minor fixes after I performed my very first oil change. Ever. (Messy, but it feels good)
Between the 2 clusters and some new bulbs I was able to
* fix the missing lighting on the left side of the cluster
* fix the left turn signal light
* install the original speedo (also broken)
* used the "better" potentiometer until I can spring for a new one
So the lights and bulbs are all working and I can see it at night...yay!
Here's what's left...
* speedometer definitely broken beyond my skills...the gears are broken (missing teeth etc)
* tach jiggle...gonna check the amp since it jiggled with both clusters
* oil pressure...also busted with both clusters, when plugged in both read 3 (highest)
* new potentiometer
QUESTIONS:
1) Oil Pressure ... is my problem likely the oil pressure sensor? Is this the same as the Oil Pressure "switch"? Any other troubleshooting to do to really find the problem?
2) The speedo I took out, that only has markings for up to about 85MPH (140km) has a part number: 126 542 44 01 ... what car does this go to? I tried searching, no luck.
3) For speedometer fixing...who do you recommend? I requested a quote from speedometer.com
