I came back from Down East just in time to go on a Sports Car back roads mountain tour .
As my Metropolitan Nash FHC isn't quite road worthy , I decided to take my trusty old 1984 Diesel Sports Coupe , it was a hot day and the car has air conditioning with a brandy new Japanese Sanden compressor & R134a .
As it turns out my turbo , the very same one I said I wanted to overhaul a year (or longer) ago , is really not working well so I wheezed the poor old thing up and down the Sta Monica Mountains as fast as it'd go , not very fast as I had to keep manually shifting the slushbox tranny between second and third gears , turning off the AC on the steep uphill parts , the Lotus in front of me easily ran away and I had to struggle to catch up to him on the downhill and straight sections of road .
Oddly the rest of the old MG's etc . weren't able to keep up with me , probably because of the stinking trail of partially burned Diesel fuel and oil I was trailing...... .
I was so slow , I only got the rear end to step out once and that too close to a telephone pole and ditch for my liking , good thing these are good handling cars that respond well to quick inputs , well assisted of course by Michelin radial tires and Bilstein HD gas shocks .
Anyway , after stuffing my face with good BBQ at The Rib Nest at the end of the run I motored on home and have been driving the even slower '81 240D since , I dug out the turbo kit I bought from Kent Bergsma @ Mercedesource last year and hope to attack it soon .
I have two spare turbos for parts and I bought the ' upgraded ' kit because I assume at 397,000 + miles everything that can be worn out or used up , is in this one .
BTW : the Sanden compressor seems to work well , I can only feel it cutting in when I'm going up hills , even then it barely slows me down unless I'm driving too fast with the throttle pinned .
Consider it the next time you do routine majo AC Service , I will on my '82 240D for sure and it still blows ice cold from it's Delco R4 compressor .
