[diesel_mercedes] Engine bay filled with fluid?

While driving down the central valley in California approaching  the Grapevine I stopped to fill my tank with veggie oil.  I had left San Francisco with 1200 pounds plus a full tank and all my stuff.  I was only getting 18mpg and 75 mph was hard to maintain.  I popped the hood and the whole engine bay was wet with what I think is hydraulic fluid from the leveling system. I got a liter and dumped it into the reservoir. Didn't even touch the dip stick.  I also didn't have the heavy weight in the 1980 300 TD.   It was funny.  Some parts were totally dry and the air cleaner had puddles I can't find where the fluid came from. Putting in the liter didn't cause more leaks.  I'm stumped.  Lawrence Rhodes

HI Ben,

Do you want to meet up sometime?  I would like to see your SD and share your pain about klima1.

That can be our first meeting for a classic mercedes club in SE Michgan.

Give me a call or email me at attymw@yahoo.com if you are available.

I have an SD like Mark.  W116 body.  General vacuum issues that I need to sort.  Over-the-winter project hopefully.

Keep in mind that there are a few of us with the W116 300SD, in all ways but the engine the same as your 280SE.  I'm well versed in the Klima I (aka Chrysler's AutoTemp II), as well as the rest of your car.  I'm sure you can contribute to me, too.

Thanks Nate.  You know I did get the servo to work so it adjust the inside heat on this gasser.  (Turned out to be loose tubes to the servo).

That's too bad Mike ;

You prolly could have made some decent $ by parting it out .

You needn't leave , there's a very diverse group of enthusiasts here , enjoy your Gasser and ask questions as necessary .

Thank you all for your advice and input on this vehicle.  Today it is laid to rest due to a rusted unibody.

I suppose that my gas 77 280SE disqualifies me from this group so goodbye everyone and all the best.
