[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1982 240D cluched seized?

Had a badly worn clutch come apart and hook one of the steel
leaves on the plate with the housing, locked it up so it would not disengage. Cant remember which vehicle it was on but was likely either a 51 chev or a 54 ford many years ago.

I think "seized" might just be a bad word choice on his part. I have had clutch face plates "slip" or "explode" with high powered engines. Throw bearings have gone bad too, and transmissions as well. But, I have never personally had a clutch seize up.

dojn't buy unless you see it up close.  Gene

That's because they had it waxed with cocaine. Drug dust is everywhere in Florida. You really have to watch out when you use a payphone. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Anyone know where these go?

They are pretty small. They wouldn't fit everywhere, unless they make different sizes of them. I've only seen one size. Do they come in different sizes? And are they really necessary?

The price differential isn't that much but I'd like to have extra protection without losing any pleasure LOL. So if the high/low switch is going to give me a hard time about 134A being too pressurized, I don't want to install it, but if it will protect my evaporator in the event of a clog, I want to use it.

[diesel_mercedes] Pre Purchase Rust Inspection

Do your self a favor ~ take it to any muffler shop and they'll lift it up so you can walk around with a good flashlight and inspect the floors (first to go) , the seams along the bottoms of the rocker panels , these skinny welded seams are called " pinchwelds " and if any bubbles or small holes are found , beware as the rust begins _inside_ so by the time there's a tiny 3/16" hole , it needs $2,000 woth of work to be set right again .

Also unload the _ENTIRE_ trunk of all that crap and lift the rubber mat (! carefully !) , look for rust holes , reach up inside the rear fenders inside the trucnk , feel for rust....

Bubbles in the paint below the windows , around the lights or side mouldings , all these are trouble spots .

There's lots of " Heckflose" Fintails and Pontons about , most have varying rust problems un less you're buying one that's had the body restored , this is the higher price of an old Mercedes .

-Nate
Brad Asked :

hi,
I am considering buying a fintail or ponton but I am unsure where to look for rot on these models. Most of the ads I see indicate that the cars have "little rust" but frequently they really mean "little rust for the age" which means frame rot may be present...I'm sure you know what I am getting at. Anyway, the common rot points and other major concerns not easily repaired are what I am interested in. thanks.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 300TD 1980 Wagon. Only high defrost. Pushbuttons

No ;

The auxiliary water pump runs so the heat doesn't taper off when you're waiting for a red light in cold weather....

Many folks just unplug and by pass it when it seizes up here in Sunny So. Cal. .

Me , I'm just a Journeyman Mechanic not an Automotive Engineer so I rarely think I can make changes that'll improve on the best designed Automobiles in the World , I just replace the flusherginner pumps when they pack it in and drive happy , no dash board fires , plenty of heat , I even have AC for my Death Valley jaunts....

I'm *so* stupid , I even use the original Becker Electronic radio as it works fine and has crystal clear sound quality unlike many 'upgrade' after market radios , hell ~ it never fails to find lots of stations no matter how far away from Civilization I get .

FWIW , YMMV so on....

Yep ;

I'm in the L.A. area , you can see how far gone an old Mercedes can be and still provide reliable, economical speedy transportation .

As long as I don't have to work , I'll be there .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Fuel Tank Drain

The only drain is the 7MM hose connected to that big 46MM nut looking thing underneath the car .

Be aware that once you undo this hose , _ALL_ the fuel will come rushing out very quickly , have several drain pans handy and plenty of CLEAN non oily towels for the Diesel Fuel that's going to soak you and irritate your skin .

I'd use a long rubber hose down the fuel filler neck to siphon out as much as possible before removing the 46MM thing , it is the in tank screen and will need gentle cleaning with an old toothbrush and fresh gasoline or better , replacement .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Pushbutton Climate Control vs Aux Water Pump W123

Yes ;

You are supposed to pry it's little white end cap off and lubricate it periodically , no one ever bothers (not even the Dealer) and they sometimes cause the dashboard to catch fire ! .

The good news is : this $135.00 part occasionally drops to sale price of under $50 and I've found some replacement ones on W-126's in the junkyards , of course you'll want to test it before buying a used one

Apparently if the Aux Water Pump is drawing too much current, it can whack the Pushbutton box. Anyone have any experience with this? They also mention the resistance of the monovalve and the blower relay amperage as two other potential culprits for whacking the Pushbutton box, but the warning for the Aux Water Pump is in red bold underlined as if it is really important.

I had new Michelins put on last week at Costco, and today dropped the
car off to get an alignment. A bit later, got a call back regarding worn
control arm bushings and idler arm bushings, which I didn't really want
to spend the money on, yet I bit the bullet and had them replaced.
Driving home I noticed quite a difference, the car handles extremely
well now. Maybe after the rain stops, I'll drive up in the hills.
