I had a similar problem for 2 years on my 1981 240D. Drove me nuts. I
recently solved it on a whim and one of those aha! moments. I replaced
the primer pump. It wasn't normally leaking fuel, but it was sucking
air. Before that I blew air back into the tank to "clear" the in tank
filter. Didn't work. Replace primer pump with the new style. Runs
fine now.
