Re: [diesel_mercedes] Water Temp Woes

I thought air bubble too. Did you drill a hole in the thermostat?

Leave the thermostat out for one and see if it improves.

If not, let it cycle thru a few heat cycles.  Bill in Oregon

There was nothing wrong with my engine temps, a rock steady 84C. But, I had this jug of MB Coolant laying around so I thought I would drain and replace the coolant. Well, after locking everything back up - my temps did not stop at 84C, they kept on going to 120+C. I have redrained, replaced the thermostat which did have gunk in it, and I am still hitting 120C. Anyone got any guesses before I start tearing things apart. The radiator is only 2 years old. No problems for several years until I drained the coolant.

[diesel_mercedes] Window Lift (W123 Wagon Right Rear)

Okay then ;

After yesterday's Desert parts marathon I didn't *quite* make it to work to - day although I did get almost five hours of sleep thanx to 500 Mg. of Ibuprofen .

I took SWMBO to the Dr's Office and then breakfast then dropped her off to go to the Gym with her girlfriend , decided what the heck and headed off Junkyarding ~

Gardena's tiny hole in the wall Self-Service yard had nothing (still has the '79 300D for $2,995.00 "! LIKE NEW ! " (not) .

So I headed off to Long Beach where LKQ claimed to have a W-123 Wagon in the rows , guess what ? . not one W-123 , I barely glanced at the few W-126's as they don't have the window lift i was looking  for .

I headed over PCH to the East Blinn LKQ and Lo ! they had ONE lonely old 1977 240D in China Blue with a Parchment interior , manual windows of course but I was able to score some really hard to find hardware and electrical parts .

Then I kept walking and found a  early poop brown 1980 W116 , it only had one window lift left and guess what ? it has the same part # that's stamped into the broken right rear window lift in my '84 wagon so I removed it and bought it for $40 .

I wasn't able to make the motor work on the old Junk Yard batteries but I have a good motor at home , all I need is the non bent , not stripped lift assembly proper . I can't want to get a moment to try it out .

I also found where SWMBO hid the good used third row  seat belt so I'll try to clean up and install that soon , then I'll only need one more , left rear seat belt .

Whew .

A good if tiring day , I left out the boring bits about accidents, traffic and so on .

[diesel_mercedes] Water Temp Woes

I had this issue on several Diesel Mercedes' when first I came to Diesels .

In time I discovered the tiny air bleed pipe leading between the cylinder head and block was clogged .

I tried drilling 3/16" holes in the thermostat flange but it'd still get up past 100° C and I know this is wrong except in Death Valley etc.

It took lots of hard work cleaning the cooling system with Citric Acid powder and distilled water before they began to behave .

Is it possible the M-B coolant was supposed to be diluted ? .

I assume you put the heater control on MAX before you re filled it ? .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Progress ? (IP Delivery Valves

Thanx Dno ;

I was thinking about your two washers in one hole when I saw none in one of my holes....

As you said : it hadn't leaked before and the sun was going down so I torqued that b*tch down and called it a day .

I occasionally run straight Dino Diesel Fuel , not often because I keep getting tiny bits of crud in the clear plastic intake screen....

My old 240D's engine has maybe 200# in # 1 cylinder and runs on three holes at idle if I let it , shakes like an earthquake (why I turned the idle up to 850 RPM) but NEVER any visible smoke so I doubt very much the additives are causing the smoking .

I bought this car as a non running junker , some stupid hippies in The People's Republic Of Santa Monica ran it on whatever cheap crap they could find and lost the fuel filler cap , no worries , right ? .

I you'd been here a few years back you'da chuckled at my struggles with it , once or twice the car DIED IN TRAFFIC from lack of fuel due to clogged intake filter .

If you've ever worked on very old and neglected junk you'll know that once water gets into a system it never leaves until you take it out ~ this one tiny droplet of water I recently found may well have been inside the IP for several years , the inside of the clear plastic intake screen used to fill up with water and black crud.....

This is why I want to replace the IP entirely , I just like to learn so I'm teaching my self as I go along
 .

So then , NO ONE knows what's the deal with the different delivery valves I posted photos of ? .

Great! re the missing? copper washer, when I found mine mis assembled ,
(two washers in one, none in the other), the one without didn't leak. The one with two did. You should try to look at it from the side (best you can) to see if
it's screwed in deeper. My thought is the spring inside will be tighter if the
threaded part is in further. May run fine but not be "right".
Another thought regarding fuel. You have been running with additives and smoking, I wonder what you would get on straight diesel. On fuel-water,
from the filling station? Water in their tanks? Condensation in yours? I would
fill a dry portable container next fill up to check.
Everyone likes shiny turds!
