Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Automatic

That seems really bad for a 240. Worn engine, hauling 6 or 7 kids around, AC, in winter , wow?. I think I only checked my 240 auto once. That was on a drive to Reno the back way where you can go 140 mph the whole way. Anyway we drove for hours with the speedo buried and the mileage was so bad I only checked once. But slow normal driving it seems good. I should check it but I hardly every drive it so it would be hard. My 4-spd has checked in well over 30 mpg several times. Max

If it's like SWMBO's Wagon , it's the " you have LESS THAN 5 MILES BEFORE YOU BEGIN WALKING ! " low fuel light ~ be *VERY * glad it works , go fill the tank and add some sort of fuel additive like Diesel Kleen , Startron , whatever .

It's supposed to come on at slightly over 2 gallons of fuel remaining , when on a dead flat and level surface . 40 to 50 miles of temperate driving left .

That it works indicates your fuel system is reasonably clean , take measures to keep it this way is my suggestion .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: High pressure hose for self leveling TD system.

I understood your question quite well Lawrence , I don't know having never worked on it yet .

There is a pressure valve in the back , if the car doesn't squat overnight you're prolly only going o loose a small amount of hydraulic fluid , it's still a wise idea to jack and safely block up the rear end in any case .

Remember : the fluid is special so don't go replenishing it willy nilly with ATF as you might screw the pooch by doing so .

If the fluid smells burned , it needs repeated flushing until it no longer does .

There's supposed to be a ring shaped filter in the top of the fluid tank , change it unless you've done so in the last 12 months .

I guess what I am asking is there a normal hydraulic fitting that screws into the factory hose?  If so is it a 10 mm, 12, or other metric size?  Do they tend to seize?  How to safely remove it?  Or should I just use brute force? Also are there check valves that will keep the fluid from squirting out under the release of pressure?  Should I jack up the back end or not....Inquiring minds want to know. Lawrence Rhodes.....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Little red triangle light next to the fuel gauge.

Agree - about 2.5 gallons. You should check it out by filling the tank and seeing how many gallons it takes, and then keeping track for a while. Sometimes the floats and senders can get cruddy.
