RE: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Auto

Thanks for the greetings from Lebec.   Great Mexican restaurant up the road in "downtown" Frazier Park.

Not by the truck stops.  Drove through there late January this year and it was snowing and blowing.

Got through just before the CHP closed it down.

110 MPH, nice, kind of an Autobahn feeling

GREETINGS FROM LEBEC , Ca. !

A fair good bit of Startron in the tank last fillup , it's been smoking ever more heavily when taking off from a dead stop and also has a *slight* miss @ idle so I'm betting one injector is drroling from a tiny speck of crud in it .

Since it was showing almost 1/4 tank I decided to run it out of fuel again , the freeway had some problem and so was backed up to a standstill so i drove up the Angeles Crest Highway , a nice twisty road with lots of high speed sharp corners to slosh the last remaining bit of fuel around and hopefully suck any crud into the intake screen .

I made it to Lebec , did 110 MPH quite a few times when the road was straight and clear of traffic and a good view ,

Pulled up to the pump @ 501 miles .

24 MPG's this tank , not very good but drooling injector and lots and lots of 100 MPH driving trying to clean the damn I.P. out .

There was very little crud in the clear plastic intake screen , I added about 6 Oz. of Startron and filled it to the tippy top , stopped and had lunch/dinner , spied a $tarbuck$ and decided to go OnLine for a bit .

-Nate

[diesel_mercedes] Pumpkin Oil

Max ;

I wasn't whining , the final drive was....

(O.K.,maybe I whined a little bit)

Anyway , yes , it's a flange and should have a washer .

Since I cleaned and re tightened it , it's remained suspiciously clean .

Still whines loudly at certain speeds & loads though .

Hey Nate, are you sure our rear end filler plugs need a metal washer? I have been driving my 240 auto and after hearing about your whining, I realized I was hearing some so decided to check the rear end. Happily it was full, so I drained it and will replace it when I recover from this latest assault from the medical people.  Anyway no washer on mine but was no leaking either.Max

[diesel_mercedes] Teeth

Ouch Max ;

That hurts AND sucks ! .

Is the implant upper or lower ? .

I ask because I began to have some implants done after my upper bridge went kaputi , got one or maybe two in the lower jaw then the Dentist said " your bone structure isn't really good for upper imp,ants , it's too delicate and they'll almost certainly fail " .

Dang .

So , I stopped there ,no point in have a lower tooth with nothing above it to work against .

Ha, Ha, quarts? Yep, thats what I need for touch ups. Maybe dip the whole car. Sorry I'm a bit depressed. Today I drove 200 miles(but happy the ac worked) to get a root canal done. I was even OK with the $1400 cost. Anyway halfway tru the deal the dentist(excuse me, endodontist) figures the tooth is not worth saving. I was happy with $1400 to save the tooth. Now its like implants, bridges, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, or just having a hole. But I have to loose the tooth real fast now. I realized our bodies are a lot like old cars, kind of hard to keep on the road and getting more costly. Anyway, first day with ac, it worked. Max

Lawrence :

My _new_ car is my '84/85 Euro Spec, W123 Desert Beige Diesel Sports Wagon...... .

The original manifolds were butchered to add a home made EGR Valve when it was new and direct imported , I just recently found a pair of non EGR manifolds and am looking forward to setting it right again .

Plus , I have '59 & '60 LBC's and a '69 Chevy Shop Truck so I'll be busy 'till I'm dead .

[diesel_mercedes] AC & Paint Chips

5.14

Hi Max ;

What's this HC12a and where to get it ? .

You're right to stop charging if it's cold enough , eases the strain on the compressor , hoses and so on .

I'm gathering tools and a work book , I have not done AC repairs since Winter of 1986 but I'm keen to get back to it as no one seems trustworthy anymore .

Is your 240D China Blue ? . one of my favorite M-B colors .

OK, I was trying to tell about working on my ac system. We put in 12 oz. of HC 12a which is equal to 34 oz of R12 or 30 oz of 134a. Could of put in a couple more ounces but it was blowing cold and I did not want to waste the rest of the can. (hey Henry, have you used any of that HC 12a yet?)  I had treated some rust spots on my 240 and they looked bad(splochy) and then I remembered a little container of touch up paint that came with my car. It had been sitting in the glove box all these years. I used it and it worked good and I had enough to do all the spots. I called Mercedes Benz of Spokane to see if they still have it and they do, $26.50 for a 0.4 oz container. It has a tiny brush. Exact same color. Max
