[diesel_mercedes] Re: Boyd's Brake Booster problem

Well, you should of had my 1930 six cylinder DeSoto with a crank for when the battery just couldn't cut it. Bought it for $35 and sold it a year later for $10 - because I was a stupid, stupid, stupid kid.

One of the reasons I like the Benz, is that the doors shut like my Dads old 49DeSoto. Slow to take off too, but what a ride?

I pushed on the rear of my TD and it bounced 7 times.  Looks like it is time for new shocks.  I also notice bad effects when hitting bumps in the road.  Not fun.  So I went to Autohaus AZ and bought the OEM rear shocks.  There is a set for cars without the auto leveling system.  Question is how do I access the shocks for replacement? I've never done it before.  Lawrence Rhodes

[diesel_mercedes] Engine Operating Temperature

Typically the engine will run it's best , most economically and last longest when run at or above 212° F .

Cooling the intake flow yields big power increases but too cold operating temperature means water vapors collect and they create _ACID_ that etches the finely polished & machined surfaces and eats up the soft lead / babbit alloy in the bearings so be *VERY* careful when overcooling the engine .

In general , your best dollar value will always be to build an oversized radiator and let the thermostat do the work of keeping the engine cool or warm as necessary .

I have heard some concerns that engine oil may not warm up enough to get rid of moisture also and can cause damage from that.

I'd be VERY worried about overfueling at lower operating temperatures Bogy .

Rapid engine wear from too much fuel .

Bogy Wrote :

Guys:

Over the last few years and especially when it's cold outside, as it is now in the rocky mountains, I have noticed that when my engine is warming up and is right around that notch between the 40 degree mark and the 80 degree mark, it sees to run really well. Good acceleration, lots pf pep and good peddle response. As it warms up further it becomes the usual engine that I just accept and take for granted. So I have been wondering if anyone here knows anything about running these engines at that lower temperature (approximately 140 degrees F or 60 degrees C) for sustained periods of time. I'm fairly sure you cannot get a factory thermostat that cold. But a standard one could certainly be modified to maintain that temperature. Question is - what, if any, are the long term consequences of doing that? Any and all thoughts/discussion will be appreciated.

I mean, it really runs good at that temperature.

Bogy.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs. Thomas Jefferson
