[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Glow Plug Lamp Out

Thank you both. I am thinking I might br in over my head, looking at all the wires and hoses under the hood of this car, but it sure does ride nice!!!
   We are supposed to get another foot of snow tonight, so it might be a while before I get to test it.
        Again,  Thanks.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Glow Plug Lamp Out

More or less what Bogey said ;

I'd first thing get my test light and clip it to a fuel injector pipe for a good ground , test it then turn on the key an rapidly touch the test light's point to each glow plug in turn to see if they're getting current .

If so , you almost certainly have some bad glow plugs .

If no current to the glow plugs , slide the GP relay's cover off and use the test light on the big stip fuseible link , it is held in by two phipllips screws that occasionally somehow work loose and loose contact .

Or , this part gets corroded , again halting the flow of current .

Then move on to unplugging the wires for further testing .

Could be ;

I approach Auto Repair and Service a bit differently than most .

Some tire catalogs still have this info , the Falcon catalog did but I couldn't find the ones with the OD I wanted .

If you're near a big place with lots of stock on hand , you can take along a tape measure....

All of my various vehicles are old and have smallish engines so large OD is important to me to get decent Highway speeds without over revving the engine .

I days gone by I'd mix and match the final drive ratio to get where i wanted to be , it turns out Mercedes kindly stamped the final drive ratio on the pumpkin's flange near the derby cover ~ I wonder how many priceless 2.88 pumpkins I walked right past , went to the crusher as no one ever checks or takes them out .

I check every single MG Midger / Austin Healy Sprite I find and wind up taking out about 1/2 the pumpkins I find as some have the hard to fond 3.90 ratio and one every few years I score a 3.72 , I run these in my personal LBC's .

When looking at radial tires , the middle # is the ' aspect ratio ' and what this means is : the higher this number , the taller the tire will be , larger OD .

I also like to run a fairly narrow tread ~ fat tires may look cool (?) but they cause more problems .

A Mechanic who'll make house calls is a rare thing indeed ~ I hope you tipped him well .

I had the good fortune to befriend a local diesel mechanic who was so intrigued with my plight that he made a house call. Long story short, yes, there is some valve slop on #2 exhaust valve, but not out of reason for 285k mi. He put the wrenches in the right places, got the valve train adjusted to spec and we're driving again. 6 weeks of angst worrying about a head job and the only head job I got was 6 weeks of needless worry.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Wheels for 300 TD

OUCH ! .

There's still a few wheel plants here in L.A. , looking at the thousands of 1/2 made wheels is always interesting to me...

You're lucky you don't have a limp Brian .

So I can measure them from the flat pieces of steel (rim) or the square piece of steel (spider) that was welded together (or riveted for larger truck rims). Four things stand out in my memory from those days:  1) when I shoved some steel into a guys chest (he survived); 2) When I stacked 10,000 lbs of steel off center and it crashed with an earthshaking roar; 3) when I dropped a wheel on my toe twice in a week; and 4) when I was stacking 3 pallets of wheels for storage and the bottom pallet broke causing 100-150 wheels to come tumbling down (being young and spry, I rolled off the forklift and hid until the noise stopped - then it was off to the hospital for a walking cast.
