 It's time to start replacing the vacuum system one piece at a time. The plastic tubing and rubber connectors are all relativley inexpensive. Come in and say hello, but not during March 5-9. I'll be on vacation.

well...this has been a long time coming.

My name is Tom and I am the proud owner of a black 1981 300td (name of Olesia).
I have been on this list since I first got the car almost 2 years ago, and read and study every post, oh...also laugh!

It's really great to know where to turn to for "my fellows", regardless of age, gender or location who share my love for the older diesel merc's.

I like to tell folks that my car was driven here from Stuttgart by way of Beirut-on-a-bad-day. (she looks as though she's seen some war, and carries scars to prove it.)

Even though I live in Irvine (home of the Classic Center), I still haven't gone to check it out or hunt down the other Tom for questioning...

Anyways, HELLOOOO o oo oo o oO o oo. sorry to be such a gnome, troll, silent hermit, etc.

Now, my QUESTION:
It's concerning my vacuum system. I know I have some issues here...
Most of the time (when it's dry) I have to manually go and lock all my doors and check the hatch lid.
When it is wet (not just cold and wet), like now with light rain, everything works perfect: car shuts down immediately, all the doors lock and hatch AND fuel door lock without a problem. I'm guessing this is how the system is supposed to work (duh, right?)
Now I know I need to do some hunting to find what causes this leak, just wanted to bounce one of my "issues" off some more experienced minds.

I have asked the local MB dealer, my mechanic (who specializes in diesel mercedes), and a friend who is an all-hats mechanic & I get 3 totally confusing answers that all involve lots of money and them thinking I am crazy for wanting to fix this money-pit.

any thoughts?

again: when wet (as in rain OR heavy-fog/overnight dew) the engine shuts off quick & all the locks close when I lock the driver's door (let's not mention the hard shifts for now [whoops!]. when dry, it's a walk-around to manually open and lock all doors.

I guess I should mention that when dry, if I turn off the ignition and exit and lock the driver door while the engine still runs, all locks will close.

never had any problem with the locks opening/unlocking. i.e. if I turn off the engine and wait for final shutoff (which seems to vary), all locks pop up.

sorry to sound like such a neophyte. I can't even begin to describe some of the other problems I am having. suffice it to say I have had much help and hope just reading the posts and learning what does/doesn't work & what to expect.

One thing you might try is going into Autotrader.com and finding one on the market in equal condition. Use the "any distance" parameter. maybe there will be one for sale. Also use 350SDL in your search, 1990-1991. They're very close in value. $11K would probably be for a very low mileage example, but not always. Good luck in your battle.

Dear all:

My insurance company determined my 1991 350SD is totalled following an encounter with a deer. Body damage is limited to the hood, grill, and driver's side headlight. Airbags are intact. All the assorted heat exchangers were damaged, which is the big cost to repair. As for the deer, well she didn't suffer after the 60 mph impact.

The Virginia dealership I towed it to estimates $12K to repair. GEICO says its market value is $4.2K. That seems like a lowball figure to me. The NADA website says an "outstanding" example is worth $11K. Mine is a two-owner car with 100% books and records. No deferred maintenance and no amateurs worked on the car. Paint & interior 100%. I verified from dealer records the PO had the "excessive oil consumption" repair on the 350 motor and confirmed it with a compression test at purchase 11 years ago. Mileage at time of accident was 201K. I think it easily falls in the outstanding category.

Anyway, to get to the point, can folks give me pointers on how to better establish FMV on a rare car with an insurance company? When I get to missing my SD, I have to remind myself it's an inanimate object.

It will be worth it , *if* you have a good painter who knows to remove the bumpers , door handles , grille and so on...

Later on you can use this as a lever to allow more expen$ive repairs as in " well Honey , it seems we oughta do this right , seeing as how we already had it re pasinted ...."

Yeah you can always look them up on ebay and craigslist for comps. There is a site called allofcraigs.com where you can search all the local craigslist boards at once. There are other sites like that as well, you can find them on google. I think some of them miss listings and they all have different refresh rates so I'd check a few of those types of sites.

I had some trouble with an insurance company a few years ago about a real estate claim. I just hired a "public adjuster" to deal with the situation. I never knew they existed, but essentially, they negotiate with the insurance company for a settlement and they create a bill of parts for replacement far exceeding the value of the property. I understand that they may exist for autos as well. 

We were willing to just take the original payout until the ins co started cutting into it and "nickle-and-diming" us to death, to the point where we could not afford to repair the property.

FWIW, there was a 84ish 300SD recently offered for sale near here for $25k+ (if i remember correctly) and it was an outstanding car, too. So I wouldn't abandon "ship."   ;-)

You might be able to collect on a negotiated totaled value and then buy the car back from them for a few hundred bucks and fix it on your own. What part of Virginia are you in? I know some guys down in the Roanoke area who will do those kinds of repairs good and cheap (but not fast LOL).

We're going over tomorrow morning to do the valve adjustment - Chip your tools and book will be heading your way soon!
