Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: How do you drive an automatic?

There is actually a lot more than meets the eye here.........

I have heard the "mercedes shift" is pronounced on first to second, and that is a fact. I back off the gas slightly when it gets ready to shift, and through each shift pattern I
am fully aware of what I need to do so much, in fact it's an automatic function in my foot
I adjust my gas pedal usage to fit the shift; i.e I back off slightly and let the tranny shift  as it will.

It's an art. But we do it willingly.........

If the transmission is shifting a lot on a twisty steep uphill I put it in S and when going down the same hill I use S.
On a rough dirt road I use first. The car tells me which to uses, if it is shifting a bunch I help it by selecting a lower gear.
What a joy to have automatics, used to drive a "two sticker" 5 gears in the main and 4 in the aux, kinda fun when you needed to shiftem both at the same time, I hate driving standards nowadays.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] No Cold Start Again

I started my #2-240 the other day, my automatic, which is my second in line 240. It had sat from last summer, never gets driven, sat tru zero degree temps, when it warmed up to 32 one day I started it and to my surprise it started on the first pop. Somebody could buy a excellent running car here. This one starts better than my #1 240 with the 4-spd. Max

So , you cycle the glow plugs then hold the throttle to the floor and operate the starter , it turns over O.K. , not sluggishly but never coughs ?  no black puffs from the exhaust ? .

Or , does it s l o w l y crank over like it's a 6 volt ? .

Or . do you only hold onto the starter for a few moments then stop because you're worried about overheating the starter ? .

Is the clear plastic intake screen full of bluish fuel or black coffee looking stuff or tiny chinks of miniature coal ? .

You _DO_ have a clear plastic intake screen , right ?  _RIGHT_ ?! .

I know there's an answer in there somewhere , we just have to keep picking away at the details until we find it .

If you have electricity anywhere near the car , put an old tech hair dryer blowing warm/hot air into the air intake ducts .

Me , I'da dumped in the entire bottle of Diesel Kleen while it was running then after a good 30 minutes , I'da driven it to fill the fuel tank with fresh Diesel Fuel .

At about 4 o'clock today when it was about 55 degrees in the garage it started up again and it has been running since. I didn't put the white bottle of diesel kleen last time and it was down below a quarter tank. When it stoped running it was about 20 degrees and had been sitting in 20 degree weather for about 6 hours. I don't know if this is another example of diesel fuel gelling or freezing or something but it is running now.

I had tried the red bottle diesel 911 but it didn't do any good. I also had put diesel heat in the tank before this happened. I hope I didn't cause any damage.

Thank you thank you for your help.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Those Old Chryslers !

No ;

More like no bid Military contracts allowing Chrysler Corporation to use up old junk they had warehouses full of .

The batteries were still tar tops .

I'd not allow that damnfool to check my oil .

Neat that anyone still cares to use those wonderful old engines .

When I was @ L.A.P.D. Air Support , we had 1964 Bell 203 helicopters , just a few left and I went digging 'round in our large piles of spare parts from the U.S. Army , who'd also supplied us our birds .

I found two trailer mounted starting carts , built in 1964 , powered by Chrysler 331 C.I.D. Hemi V-8 engines , 6 volts .

I was able to get them running , they had *very* low hours and ran like new .

We sold them both for scrap metal a couple years later .

The latest round of Jesse James (the custom bike/car guy) has him in a new shop in Texas . They hooked up an old Chrysler hemi to a newer transmission. They were able to get an adapter plate but it required cutting the bell housing off of the motor. They did it. Bill

[diesel_mercedes] Those Pesky _FACTS_ Again !

Just so Bill ! .

How else do you think Tom and I survive tooling 'round in our low budget clapped out junkyard rigs ?

We always try to dot every 'I' and cross every 'T' so when things go sideways , there's much more room for errors .
