[diesel_mercedes] Re: It's Hot

Sid,

My German mechanic that uses nothing but dealer Benz parts has a stock of it, not sure where he got it. I am not sure what he wants to charge me to change over my system. These two things might be closely related!

I understand that there is an R12 that can still be bought that has some modification but works, not sure of the name.

I also hear R12 is cheap and plentiful in Mexico but that's a bit far for you and a bit dangerous for me.

So the BIG question from me,,, IS there any R12 still available? My '85 300SD is in need of a re-charging, and am wondering if I had to go with R134, which I understand to be more corrosive. My only window that still works is the front passenger's one, and the sunroof, which just lets the sun bear in on there days. Even here near Niagara Falls, it has been up to the mid 90s!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] air in the clear fuel line from the secondary filter to the injector pump.

That line is under pressure. Any air in the system can only get in through a leak in a negative pressure area of the system. I can think of only two ways.

First through a leak in a line that is always under "vacuum" - such as the suction line from the tank to the input of the hand pump on the side of the IP. Everything after that hand pump is under pressure. But this would produce bubbles all the time.

Second, through a leak in the (normally) pressurized side once the engine is shut down. When the engine is shut down, the normally pressurized part will eventually end up under vacuum as the fuel wants to flow downhill back to the tank through the return lines. Since the bubbles show up in the line from the large canister filter to the IP, The leak is likely between the output of the hand pump and the banjo bolt on the input rail of the IP. Do you by any chance see any fuel leaks in that part of the system when the engine is running?

Bogy.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: air in the clear fuel line from the secondary filter to the injector pump.

Don't know how you have it rigged but if you tighten clamps and everything above the filter your problem should go away. Make sure the big filter is tight, too. I think the return is a separate system, doubt if it would cause the problem. I rerouted my return to avoid the banjo. Took the banjo out altogether. You can plug that banjo bolt hole with a 20 mm bolt (I think it's 20 mm but check my math on that) but you need the right thread pitch, too. I got mine at NAPA, they had it in the store in stock no problem. Matched it up with that hollow banjo bolt and it works fine. Never understood why return went through that banjo bolt anyway...

I converted my 82 to the new system and have had no problems.  It was done by the dealer!

Nate,

My German guy here in Houston is cussin me every time I,see him for allowing my R12 system to a newer product. It barely works in this heat, even with your pencil inserts,in center dash. He says it will get no better until I go back to R12.

We can't turn back the hands of time, but Damn,if we can't try.
