Mark, did you ever find a rebuild kit for that pump? I can find one for the 1980 SD all day long. Nothing for this oddball on the ’79.

I posted the same question on Kent Bergsma’s board and this was his reply: “The newer style pump is the better design because they did away with the rubber diaphragms. They are not directly interchangeable. You would have to change the I.P. pump timing device that drives the vacuum pump. Older style had two diaphragms and the repair kit is dealer only.”
So looks like I need to source the repair kit. Maybe. I note your request of me in the last paragraph and now I do remember reading this one. I’ll let ya know once I get this thing back on the road.

It was message number 53626, titled "Super-Leaky SD - Solved?", October 18, 2010.
Only rebuild the diaphram pump if that's the set-up you have. To convert a piston-style-equipped engine to the diaphram-type pump requires more than mere bolt-across. It's all in the "Super-Leaky..." post.... Except for the part where I found the rebuild kits for the diaphram pumps (at autohausaz.com, for instance, you hafta to look it up as a rebuild kit for an earlier car, say, '74 240D. All the look ups for the '79s bring up the piston-type pump).
Now that I know this, I'm probably going to convert mine back to the original diaphram pump.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: New whatzitdo? Electric wiring block on How to jump my '84 300SD?
Thanks for the advice on the wiring block - I'll attend to it soon. I'm enough of an "electrician" to make the suggested repairs, I have a good selection of replacement terminals and plenty of shrinkwrap tubing.
Anyone else know which wires I jump to make the starter kick in?
thx,
Barton

That green that shows on the fourth wire back isn't the color code, it's corrosion. The 123 is similar, if not so many wires. That terminal was corroded through on my 123 which caused a no charge situation, which caused a no start situation from a dead battery . In your case that may be the no start cause. the terminals should probably be replaced. Cut the wire back to clean solid wire and attach new terminals. Shrink wrap is good. If the wire is too short for a proper repair, splice in new sections.

But when I removed the old one, I wished I had waited to get some Miracle Paint - because even here in sunny California water seeps to the bottom of the door and rusts out poorly painted metal. The car has 300,000 miles and the doors will outlast me - but I still wished I had the paint handy when I pulled the old seal as it would be a simple fix at the time. Makes me think that, if it can happen in sunny Cali, the bottom of most 25+ year old doors in the rest of the country will be showing some rust.
