Re: [diesel_mercedes] FINALLY got my 300D, now many questions

Trish,

We are south of Houston about an hour so would not be too economical to do that! You can send me your addy at mratkins@embarqmail.com and I will be glad to send you a copy. I think I have 5 or 6! I have some parts cars and projects if you need something to do as well.

Take care, and let me know.

Mark

Hi Brian

I found the Haynes book for $9.99 at Half Price Books online. That beats $29.99 in store.  Both place would have to order.  Thanks for the tips.  I have a lot to learn, explore, enjoy!

Both of my 1983 300d's have wires going to nowhere. Previous owners or mechanics seem to have cut wires, and just added new wiring rather than pull old wiring and replace. The Haynes Mercedes manuals are available at Pep Boys and other such retailers. Use google to chase down things. Those searches will turn up a lot of URL's for MB sites, some of which are quite good. Go to Wickepedia and search for "Mercedes 300d" and you will get some good overall information too.

I honestly don't know what wires they were speaking of.  There were too many conversations going on, I missed out on that one.  I know the boys dad pointed them out to my hubby, said he had no idea where they went.  He's a diesel mechanic, for what that's worth.  The car just passed inspection. Horn works, lights work, no dash lights. Fuzes are OK, we checked them again yesterday.  He showed us the a/c wires that were rat chewed, so those aren't the ones that are unknown.  I'll ask hubby and have him point them out then take a pic.

Orange is prettier?

OK - here is the real news. In Honor of Mark's birthday, Autozone has Shell Rotella on sale today (and maybe the rest of the week too). A gallon for $12.99 reduced from $17.99 - a $5.00 savings. I was going to get a couple of quarts, but the sale price convinced me to splurge. I'm not going to change oil until November or December but I am tempted to grab a few more (8 quarts x 2 cars = 16 quarts = 4 gallons x $13 = $52).

So, speaking of anti freeze, would someone please tell me again why we need to use MB anti freeze, the orange stuff? It's time to test or change for me, and I've never used anything but green stuff. I've had MB diesel since 1976. So why should we use orange stuff? Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] FINALLY got my 300D, now many questions

I'm going to have to research this. I honestly can't answer.  Since I've only had the car for a week now and haven't driven it but a few times, and only put it in reverse a few times, I can't remember! I'll check it out though.  I still have a lot to learn about this car.  Thank you for the information.  I've been printing everything off for quick reference.

This studder; does it do this upon initially putting the car in reverse, with eventual, solid engagement, or is the shudder constant?

If you DO have the 722.02 transmission (with the square, four-bolt oil pan), you should know that reverse is the first to go in these transmissions.  The reverse servo band piston has a rubber lip seal that dries out and begins to break up.  This usually manifests itself as delayed engagement into reverse, which can be made faster by revving up the engine, and, eventually, no reverse.

The servo piston can be serviced without removing the transmission.  There is an external band adjustment that can be tried first, but, it usually doesn't help....
