Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D Lack Of Power & Hard Starting

Well done!  Probably just needs to be driven to clear out the various cobwebs in this car.

Likely this car could do well with a Diesel Purge "tuneup":

This is my second 240D. My first was a snazzy red with black interior '74.
She ran well again tonight. It's getting near time to top it off. I ran it until it coasted last time. Fuel gage lied to me. Since then I took it apart and found the labrynth and the bleed hole in its base to completely clogged, causing it to retain fuel and preventing the float from dropping all the way. I swayed her a few times to get a load of fuel in the pickup and made it to a station before I had to walk. I don't want to risk that again. I'm getting too lazy to go hiking with a can in my hand anymore.
New fuel pump will be here on Friday. Sunday is the Botham Vineyards car show in Barneveldt WI. Haven't missed one in 22 years and the only one I did not show up in a Citroen was the first one. This might be a shock to a few people, but I am not sorry to have this car.
Thank you all for your support and your great advice.
Had a good couple of days. I think we are on the far side of this problem. On Friday I replaced the original leaky fuel pump. Sunday I drove it about 150 miles. She only staggered once and that was on a short jaunt. Met a fellow at the Botham Vineyards car show who works in a diesel shop in Madison. He said that they used to have a lot of them in, but not so much now. He reiterated what you guys have been saying, that it is probably a sticking "rack," the sliding bit that sets the volume for all of the injectors. The shutdown vacuum valve pushes against it to close off the fuel and it probably get hung up down towards the end and does not pop back. He pointed out the supply and return lines for the motor oil, that if it has been sitting for a long time, the pump takes time to clean up.
This afternoon, I used the dash idle up and it started perfectly after using the glow plug relay twice.
