RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Doing some R&D need your help

In the 123s, that is.  The S-class models, 300SD, W116 and it's successor, the W126, were turbo'd from the start (1978).

It's only on the turbo'd engines. they didn't start putting turbo's on them till 80 or 81.

That's because the non turbo engines don't have them.....

The good news is : once you've tuned it to the Nth degree , you can flat foot it all day long and it'll go like stink and get decent fuel economy too .

Just remember : Diesels _DO_ need regular tune ups and maintenance or they'll become unreliable money pits .

Not a good idea to put a turbo on a n/a engine. the n\a engines have a higher compression and may not be able to handle the (even) higher pressures a turbo would produce. Also, the turbo engines have an oil sprayer under the pistons to help remove heat that the n\a engines don't have. just my $0.02

Hi guys
I just found my self buying a 1979 300d 123
and then I found a turbo set up all the parts are there everything off a 79 turbo 300D what's the chance I can put it on my car with not a lot of trouble.
Is there a big difference between the two engines? Please someone give me some good news.  Thank you for any advice you could give.

This Saturday morning there is a Mercedes Meet & Greet , Museum Tour and Pizza luncheon , so far hardly any of the usual suspects are in.....

I am told it is because of the fuel costs .

I hope to make it , we'll see , Coupe will prolly not get washed first dangit .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Diesel fuel $3.92 an counting. $4.50 on the west coast. Veggie

when lows temps are above freezing I push cold fuel to engine with a 9 psi pump.In the engine bay all heating takes place.

I run a single tank with larger lines from the tank to the lift pump with heat
exchangers in line.  I do not heat the tank.  If I was in a colder climate I
might consider it but running the west coast it's possible not to need to do
so.  Lawrence Rhodes.....
