SWMBO driving this tank , the Foster boys seem to automatically roll the AC thumbwheel to MAX every time they get in no matter how cold it may be that day .
248 miles , 26.2 MPGs , not bad for a 375,000 mile engine .
I've been using both MMO & Startron because the primary fuel filter looked dark , I took it off to - day in the Pick N Save parking lot as SWMBO was shopping , it turns out the fungus was long gone but the clear filter had a dark color to the internal plastic ~ no chunks blew out when I cleaned it so I replaced it with the spare , new intake fuel screen I always try to carry in the glovebox , cleaned up and went into the store , She hadn't realized I'd popped the hood and done this and other tinkers & routine checks because it was so fast & easy .

[diesel_mercedes] Diagnosing Oil Leaks
Be aware that one must never , _EVER_ use carby cleaner for -anything- because it attacks & destroys rubber (hoses) and plastic (more hoses & tubes) and so will , in every case , make things far worse .
Use cans of Engine De - Greaser , the basic stuff , NOT ' foamy ' ,
' steam ' , clinging ' or other bullcrap marketing junk , just Engine Brite brand PN EB1 or similar , spray on two whole cans then allow it to soak into the oil , spray more using a soft brush to work it all around & mix up the old road grime & grease ~ allow to soak for 20 minutes _minimum_ then rinse off with plain water , a garden hose or the coil operated car wash , buying used long sleeve clothes from the Thrift Shop first is wise because as you're doing this job , you'll get covered in oil , nasty mess and it's easier to disrobe & bag up the filthy clothes than it is to clean the mess out of the car seats & doors panels .
In a pinch , the engine oil cooler hoses can be repaired at any big rig truck shop by cutting away the round collars where the hose meets the steel pipes , this collar is a manufactured crimp clamp & once it'd cut away , the old rotten hose can be slid off the end of the steel pipe revealing a standard Metric hose nipple , get some correct size _Hydraulic_ hose and some wide , heavy duty hose clamps , measure the hose length thrice , cut once , use the clamps and motor on home .
This will work on those golden bronze colored plastic hoses in the fueling system and IP oil feed plastic pipes too , just for God's sake , DO NOT forget to replace them with the correct parts ASAP when you arrive home .
Tom and The Mercedes Classic Center has the right stuff that fits , is best quality and the price is discounted so you don't feel the freight charges .
Everyone else has pretty much covered the rest so I'll just wait to hear what the trouble is .

[diesel_mercedes] A L o n g Weekend !
It began early when my old trucks carby died beyond repair late thursday night and then Tom called to say he'd rolled down both driver's side windows on his '81 W-126 300SD , now they refused to consider rolling up again , could I maybe have a looksee at it Saturday ? .
I'm sure his rendition of the fun I had taking both doors apart and discovering the baboon who'd replaced both lifts before had left parts out and mangled things so it's not surprising they both failed again , will be far more informative than my babbling , it includes hot Pastrami sammitches & chili fries , working in the filthy greasy dirt ground Pick-A-Part Junkyard in the rain , a surprise chance finding of a '72 Chevy Nova base model Coupe with a 230 CID engine scattered into about 7,000 pieces (some of which my old Chevy truck *sorely* needed) , old friends dropping by and commenting how much he hates working on doors too , discovering Mercedes has re designed the windows lifts at least THREE TIMES and they _still_ fail without warning ....
A W-123 with both Euro bumpers in nearperfect shape on it (I was too busy to grab 'em) , on and on and on...
Suffice it to say that I was *so* tired by the end of my 18 + hour Saturday ,I was able to actually sleep almost 6 hours....
Stay tuned , he'll chime in soon .
=8-) .

I'm always amazed at how simple & easy , the folks who don't actually do the work , make my repairs sound.....

Tom Wrote :
I run Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Very slippery. Even with deep cleaning of the hose, the clamp and rubber piece wanted to slide sideways. It took a while to get it positioned right.
Once it was positioned, it stayed in place for more than a month of leak free driving, until I could convince Nate to actually crawl under, get the engine lifted off the engine mount, and install the new hoses (I replace both, even though only one was cut).

Yabbutt ;
Then I'd have nothing to do then , would I ? .
And , how could everyone else learn if I don't post how I fix 'em and learn as I go along ? .
BO-RING ! =8-) .
No thanx , my battered 1984 300CD Diesel Sports Coupe hummed right past $10K last year and I've not yet addressed the poor paint & minor rust below the backlight , you are correct , I love dumping vast amount of time and elbow grease into it .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : windshield wiper pump gasket & passenger side wideangle mirror.
Pass side W-123 mirrors are cheap , the glass alone should be $10 or less used .
W-123's have a fittment break in the 1982 model year run so beware .
I prolly have complete Pass side mirrors for any W-123 or W-116 , including Coupes and a few W-107 R. sides mirrors too @ $50 delivered anywhere in America . I bet you can find just the glass cheaply in any local M-B Shop .
I like to use stick on round fish eye mirrors on the outer , upper edge of the mirrors , both sides .
Remember to clean the WSW jets of crud with a thing bit of stiff wire occasionally , the back pressure from clogged jets is what screws up the WSW system .

It has prolly turned you into a Diesel Junkie.....
Soon you'll be enjoying the smell of Diesel Fuel , be it Dinosaur or Bio....
You'll squeal with delight when you discover that obscure Partshaus that sells the correct , " Just So " fuel inlet filter screens for only $2.50 each and has rubber air cleaner mounts IN STOCK ....
It gets far worse but like most addicts , you won't mind atall .
Sorry about the no rent $ thing , that's de regulation for you . when our cars were made , gas was .65 CENTS and Diesel Fuel was .27 CENTS

[diesel_mercedes] Re : 1985 turbo diesel
Then I reiterate : it's a good buy ! .
Moreso because you live in The Rust Belt so not easy to find .
Just remember : Mercedes are _NOT_ Toylettas ! if you drive it and forget to change the oil & filter @ 3,000 miles because it's January and just to freaking cold , it'll be a money pit junker in a couple years....
Every little thing has to be looked after or it'll die .
To post pix , go to the home page of this group & create a photo album ,fill it with clear well lit pictures , not in the shade / shadows , at the very bottom of that page you'll see a box to check that sends a notification out to the list .

no rust, and aside from a few chips in the paint a great looking car. I am in Wisconsin and I want to know if 5500.00 is a fair price and can I use it as a daily driver? What should I be looking at on this car? Thank for the help!!

I forget what the boost pump range is because I didn't check it...I put a new one on the car. ebay $90.

Tom's saved my ass a few times too. Like when I needed a water pump the day before a road trip. It helps that Irvine is 15min down the road. Good prices too. I 3rd the rant.
