Re: [diesel_mercedes] Used transmission needed for a 1977 240D.

I have a 4-bolt-pan unit from a 79 300td, mechanical kickdown.
It's in utah so shipping could be steep
I need to pull the engine soon for rework to go into my 78 300D so the tranny
could come out at the same time.
They will bolt right up. Just not sure if there is a gearing difference between
240's and 300's.

RE: [Diesel-RVs] biodiesel

I would run a QUALITY bio-diesel that was made by someone that knows what
they are doing or a commercial vendor. SVO needs to be heated and filtered
before you can use it. I'd be very leery of using it. If you have a late
model engine, $750 for 1 injector is not unusual. Replacing 6 would get
spendy. My Cat has all the injectors under the valve cover so labor gets up
there too. Making your own bio-diesel requires methoxide or sulfuric acid
which are both pretty nasty acids. I was going to try to make my own but
the only place I have is an attached garage. I decided against it. I'm
sure my wife with her super sensitive nose would notice the vile odors
emanating from the garage and stop my fuel making before I got much made.
OTOH my son has a 66 Mercedes and he runs SVO in it. He had it converted
with some pretty high tech heaters and an extra fuel tank. It cost about
$3000 for the conversion. He's always hauling extra oil around and spends a
lot of time looking for restaurants to give him their used oil. I wouldn't
have the patience for it. Then again it's almost free....

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Replacement Automotive LED bulbs

Ron,
Wait 1-2 years(If that long) and they will be over the counter lighting systems. It is
coming. Go to ebay and search LED taillights. The bulbs are available, now at a reasonable
cost, not $12 each as they were a couple of years ago. They plug into your standard 12V
light socket.
The thing with using LED's as turn indicators, you need a special "blinker can" since
LED's do not have much of a current draw to activate the signal can. They are available
too, again, check ebay.
Most of these are colored or white LED's. I have ultra bright LED's that look white
(clear) but burn Red. And depending on which resistor I use, I can change the intensity of
the emitted light. Also, when using LED's as taillights, you have to "aim" the LED as
they give off light only in an approximately 140 degree angle, not 360 degrees as a
standard light bulb (like the kind used in the rear of your car, 1154). But it will be
different for my car, taillights with out a red lens or red dots.
Before anyone starts asking a lot of questions... I was given (I bought) the LED's,
given (I bought) the resistors and an explanation as to how to assemble these for a
taillight project I want to do in my street rod. I do not have a part number for either
the LED or the resistors (I know, read the colors on the resistors) but I do not know
anything about what, how, why... and now the supplier I had has disappeared. It is like I
was given a car, I learned to drive, but do not have a clue as to rebuilding the engine.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Henry's Crashing Crane

WOW ! . I once had a mechanic who did a simple job on an engine that
required pulling it then flipping it on it's side , I stupidly
assumed he knew enough to slowly rotate the engine by hand a few
times after re-installation & before firing it up , he didn't and so
it tried to light off but only fired on one hole then hydro-locked on
the cylinder that was full of oil and bent a conecting rod....

We used to keep slabs of plywood here & there in the shop for
stopping runaways on our Big Rigs but no more , I guess the NOOBS
just expect to let 'em run and grenade .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] cold starting

Well,
I had a wonderful time in Helsinki, and, Rovaniemi.....saw the Aurora, drank
to much, met some nice gals, made friends with some of the locals......they
are quite friendly, especially if you attempt their language............as
bad as I butchered it, they seemed to appreciate my attempts. Even though I
spoke a little Estonian, which is similar.........
Seemed like it'd be hard to get a Finn mad.........they seemed so happy all
the time (Laka......?)
or, that drink I had, I can't remember the name. It was black, tasted like
Vodka, licorice (not sweet), and salt. Quite nasty, really. But, they kept
offering it to me, so...........

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Another Good Day's Work !

Finally got biodiesel rated 5/16 fuel lines installed in engine
area, except for cigar hose. You could tell these hoses only 11 months
old were starting to swell from WVO,WMO,WATF,SVO and biodiesel.I'll get
Napa to make the ones at the tank this spring, after I pull tank, and
clean it. Thinking about using it as a mold and fiberglasses me
one.Thats only if it doesn't catch diesel slime too.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Henry's Crashing Crane

yeah,
such strange things happen right near teenagers, without their involvement
at all. .............

Interestingly:
The crane survived pretty much intact. some minor bending of sheet metal, on
handle broken, that's it, except for an interesting occurrence. Something
I'm sure an experienced vehicle rolling person would have thought of:
Since the truck sat upside down for a day, it seems oil leaked into the
cylinders........
So, after I checked the fluids and re-installed the batteries, I cranked it
over to see if it'd start.
BOY HOWDY!!!!
It "ran away" for about 30 seconds..........super high rpm, pulling the
"kill handle" had no effect. But, once the oil in the cylinders ran out, it
shut off. Seemingly, no worse for wear, although, it did bath me and
everything for 50 feet in black soot and oil......and, probably cleaned any
carbon out of the system.

That is how I know shutting off the fuel is not the best way to stop a
run-away diesel. Stopping the air is the only sure fire way to stop it.....

Was it hard to choose the best ones, or did you go by age, weight......? I trust that you have a decent reason for the trip, we go there often on the ferry, mostly for the party, not many of us actually de embark...... [diesel_mercedes] Re: fuel filter woes

Short bursts of cranking isn't going to get it running ~ the starter
is designed for you to keep cranking it untill the engine fires and
begins to gain RPM's and runs on it's own ~ read your manual , you're
beating up on the starter and battery too by doing it wrong .

If there's chunks of crud in the intke screen , remove it and bkow them
out backwards .

Why not just go to a Third World country and adopt a town? Then you can find many adoring women who will do your biudding, you don't have to marry them, and all will be well. You can call it "Nateland." <:->

Oh my ~ I had a 1970 VW Van too , it was the sky blue with white

I still have a 1968 _Panel_ Van in my back yard , someday someone

Just replaced all fluorescent (11 ThinLites) in our 02 Windsor with
LEDs. The 18" fixtures now have 2 strips of 18 LEDs each and the 12"
fixtures have 2 strips of 12 LEDs each. Result is significantly brighter
and more pleasant light. Cost was $402. Not something that everyone
would necessarily want to do, cost wise. My motivation was the fact that
4 of our fixtures were in need of repair (ballast), the cost of which
would have been about 1/3 the cost of conversion. On top of that is the
cost of tubes at about $5 each done every 2-3 years and any possible
future failures. We used our fluorescents a lot. Time to convert is
about 15 minutes per fixture. Bottom line: glad we did it.

$1500 +/- with one year warranty in LA plus installation $$, except when you gamble on a used one (like the 1982 TD one I have sitting).  I think Nates guy may come in a little cheaper if you claim to be his out of town cousin.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Replacement Automotive LED bulbs

Thanks for that link. Does anyone have experience replacing their
indoor overhead light bulbs and/or fluorescent lights with LEDs. I'm
curious how you like them and how many LEDs are needed to make the
room seem as well lit as it was with the incandescent or fluorescent
bulbs/tubes.

Hi Mark

I put a block heater in my oil tank but I found that it caused a lot
of condensation - so I don't use it. My oil is solid for 6 months of
the year but I have a home made 'hot fox'. It's just some of that
easily bendable chromed copper pipe that rings around the pick up and
it is the coolant that flows in the pipe that heats things up.

Hope that helps.

Hey Karl, where are you at? Finland, Sweden? What latitude? Max

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Real Time Tire Inflation

I can speak to the Crossfires - had a set put on last year - great tool. Could never get a pressure gauge on the stem to check the pressure, stem extensions never worked well. For $160 (installed) these are great - one place to check pressure and inflate - just look for the yellow bar - if black under pressure by at least 10%, if red then over pressure at least 10%.

[Diesel-RVs] Crossfires (was Re:Realtime tire inflation systems)

Michael,

Where are Equal valve stems available on the internet, and what is the
advantage? They don't come up when I do a web search. I'm going to
have Crossfires put on my coach in a couple of weeks. How do I decide
which air pressure setting to get? Is it the setting closest to the
pressure I usually keep in the tires? I assume the only difference is
the built in gage setting. Is that so? I was going to get 100 or 105#.

Thanks,
Mike
