Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: The Frankensteining of Great Cars

John,

The way I heard it:

The original GM Hydramatic was one of the most efficient automatic transmissions available.  But GM could not get it smooth enough for luxury cars, so they invented a new transmission to replace it.

RR bought it and made it carefully and it was so smooth that it was fine for the RR.

They tightened up the tolerances and used wavy plates in the clutches.

Actually, the association goes back much before the Turbo Hydramatic 400, to the original, 4-speed Hydra-Matic of the early '50s.  In my opinion, an even better transmission; the only automatic battle-tested in World War II, four of them were installed in the little M24 "Chaffee" light tank.

(Hydra-Matic was also used by Hudson, Nash, even arch-rival Lincoln.)

Thanx Brian ! .

The tranny was the venerable GM Turbo Hydro 400 , a very good tranny indeed .

That's hilarious!  Cher is 65 now (at least the original parts are), something I cannot quite grasp.

Well, that would be due to shrivlage and general decrepitude...

That's hilarious!  Cher is 65 now (at least the original parts are), something I cannot quite grasp.

I'll contribute my hydra-matic story to the collection.  Mine involves a '64 Cadillac Series 62 coupe.  1964 was that year that Cadillac introduced Turbo Hydra-Matic on the Fleetwood Sixty Special, Eldorado and de Ville models. but the lowly Series 62 and the limousine still had the old 4-speed hydra-matic.  I was at a car wash one day, with cars behind and in front of me when the car wash broke.  We were all stuck for about 20 minutes while they fixed it.  As has been pointed out, the gear selector in this transmission was PNDSLR.  When the jam up finally opened and it was time for me to move forward, in a fit of temper I pulled the lever all the way down (thinking I was in a different car apparently), hit the go pedal, and went careening backward into a Honda Civic.  Not even a scratch on the Cadillac, but the Honda needed a $2500 new front end.  Oops!

[diesel_mercedes] Blaupunkt Frankfurt US (S)

A older friend has passed to me his Blaupunkt Frankfurt US (S)radio and asked if it is of any interest to Mercedes enthusiasts. As it will not fit any of my cars, I am first solicting interest from this group. This is a Blaupunkt Frankfurt US (S) transistor model with hard wired 3 pin speaker output and a 6 pin DIN connection (never used). It is a mono radio with FM AM and SW bands. There are two preset selector buttons each for FM and AM, with one button for SW. Controls are for Volume / Tone and Tuning / Sensitivity. All knobs and buttons are in pefect condition and the chrome faceplate is there (no pitting). Radio was tested using a 12VDC power supply and a short wire for antennae. Reception and sound quality are excellent. The owner is 90 years old and has about 75 years experience as an electronics tech and amp builder, so he bought the best he could when he converted from a tube car radio to transistor. The sound is testimony to the quality Blaunpunkt put into their radios, even in these early days of transistor sets. He has not driven for many years, so the radio was removed and stored in his radio shop until this week. If you are interested, send me a PM with your email address and I will send a few photos.

Barry
