[diesel_mercedes] Diesel Purging, ALDA Adjusting & Smoking

I've done this so many times I stopped mentioning it ~ the last few times no crud came out into the filter I always put in the return end of the 'cigar hose' .

I don't know why all the crud isn't gone by now, this has been the worst ever bad fuel vehicle I've EVER owned/worked on .

To - day was a busy day, at the end I turned the ALDA screw 1/2 turn clockwise and snugged up the lock nut again, I *think* I'm seeing less smoke in the rear view mirror when I take off from a dead stop, it still seems to have plenty of power, I did a 30 + mile run at 85 ~ 90 with less than 1/3 throttle so we'll see .

The proof is always near the end of a tank of fuel, that's when the filter begins to show the crud .

The original Becker radio decided to play with the key off to - day ~ I can't say I don't like this but I worry I'll forget it's on and run the battery flat .

I also replaced the passenger side seat back cargo net's plastic holder yet again, I'm not sure what it is I do to keep breaking the darn things, I had one left and will need to find two more in Palomino before too long .

I began tinkering with the central locking, replaced the yellow three way check valve under the hood and replaced a few short hose bits that came off to easily for my liking, then SWMBO called me and said "BE STILL !" Yes, dear .

Nate, with crud in the IP don't you just Diesel Purge?

When I've done this in the past a bunch of fine crud comes out of the IP injector lines etc.

Thanx to a lister here I was finally able to get the correct sized 2-1/2" body plugs for the back of the car where the U.S. spec. bumper shocks used to go, this should slow down and maybe even halt the exhaust fumes that have been drafting into the car for a few years now ~ I recently removed the interior and carpets to give everything a really good scrubbing and the amount of greasy black crud every where was sobering, I still need to clean the headliner but the rest of the interior is now nice, I even removed the rear seat  belts and cleaned them, found an undamaged driver's side sun visor and installed that (still looking for a Palomino Coupe DS sunvisor, hint)  .

I also cleaned up and installed the much better steering wheel I found on a junked 1982, it's noticeably thinner where you grip it than is the same P/N original one on my 1984 .

[diesel_mercedes] Alda Adjustment

THANK YOU Stan ! .

This is *exactly* what I was looking for .

Back when the Diesel hipster movement was going on I kept hearing about people turning it up to make more power, my engine is over fueling so I'd like to lean it out a little bit by turning that screw clockwise .

The ALDA on the NA engines is still very important as it acts as an altitude compensator .

Don't know who wrote this for the list.

A counter clockwise turn on the screw moves the
diaphragm up (just like extra air pressure would) and causes it to
provide more fuel to the engine.  Conversely, a clockwise turn on the
adj. screw, forces the diaphragm down and it provides less fuel to the
engine.

This ALDA thing is there because these cars are mechanically
fuel-injected, not electronically injected...  There's no computer
(with its requisite air pressure and temp sensors and O2 sensors) to
regulate the fuel flow for the best air-to-fuel ratio, so there has
to be a mechanical way of "measuring" the air in the intake
manifold.  The ALDA is what does that.  Whether its actually called
an ALDA or not on the non-turbo models is beside the point....
