[diesel_mercedes] Injector Pump Elements

Indeed ! .

O.K. , here's how it went :

I got home and set up to clean the new used elements and parts , they were four of one typ and one of another.... all had the same part number but the machining on the one different one was clearly done differently .

All in good looking shape and fitment but all had a thin coating of fine black film , easy to clean off , I always clean the middles of the springs too as crud likes to hide in there and cause problems .

I took the # 1 fuel pipe off and the element out , (I bought a nifty telescoping magnet thingie to easily remove the elements with) , swabbed down inside the IP and lo ! no dirt .

I guess the startron I've been dosing it with got it all out .

The element in the car has a slightly different shape than the ones I got from the Junk Yard so I chickened out and polished it and re installed it with a third different Junk Yard fuel pipe , buttoned it all up and started it up , it still weeped in pulses so I shut it off and gave the 17 MM nut one last yank with the wrench , wiped up the leakage and tried it again , success ! no more leaks .

Sadly the left side engine shock absorber mount died from the Diesel fuel dibbling on it , these are NOT CHEAP but I'll have to find some new ones , maybe aftermarket .

It still smokes of course , I need to find a good clear image of how the elements are assembled as you can install the ring part upside - down , I don't *think* I did but I'd love to make sure before I go back in and change all the current elements out because there's RUST on them ~ . I knew this car had water in the fuel when I bought it , I polished the rusty area as best I could but we're talking about really fine clearances here so I'll give it one more go and replace all five elements , valves and springs before I give up and change out this old beat up injection pump .

I'm at least happy it's not leaking anymore .

It smokes mostly when the turbo spools up and boost passes 5 # .

I really need to figure out how to take macro pictures with the iPod , or get Tom to come by with his new digital camera as the details of the parts I am sure would be fascinating to all here .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Injector Pump Weeps

I want to but I'm freaking out that I will break something. I found a mobile mechanic who used to live in Germany and work on these things there for 15 years. I think I will give him a call. Plus I am not strong enough and can't get the right angle to get those tubes off that are connected to the fuel rail thing.

1965 Mercedes Benz 190D

I know my pic is not of the injectors...I have to remove the tubes and stuff from this part first before I can get a socket over the injectors. So basically my question is, is how to remove these things? I am sorry i don't know what they are called.

I'll agree with Nate about the injectors themselves without knowing your skill level. I will add, when you reinstall the injectors you will need new heat shields. Get the torque specs for your car.

[diesel_mercedes] Injector Pump Weeps

O.K. , I'm home again .

Last night I began smelling raw Diesel fuel so I popped the hood and looked in with the engine idling , the # 1 element on the I.P. is soaking wet now , I think I can see the fuel pulsing out under pressure .

So ,

I bought a large stamped steel pie pan a BIG bottle of 50 % denatured alcohol and a box of Q-tips , two cans of starting fluid and a tiny magnet on a stick to get the valves out of the IP after I remove the double ended threaded connectors ~ here's my quick plan for to - night :

Remove the # 1 fuel pipe and element , valve and spring , swab down inside the IP's open connector with a Q-Tip to see what / if / how much crud I find , then blow it out for the starting fluid and snorkel .

Take the collection of used elements , valves and springs I harvested from a W-116 recently as Tom made rude comments about my fanaticism..... I have already cleaned the double ended threaded parts on a motorized wire wheel and now I'll clean all the parts until they're cleaner than a pig's mouth (one of the cleaner things in nature BTW) before I carefully dry them off by hand and inspect closely for wear and rust , damage or who the heck knows what , then I'll install one and button it back up using yet another used # 1 cylinder fuel pipe , wash it all dry with the starting fluid then fire it up and see what I get .

If it doesn't weep / leak , I'll drive it to SWMBO's place to - night then change then all soon , maybe this weekend .

If it leaks , I will be weeping worse than the IP ever did , maybe I'll just give up and replace the whole danged IP as I have a spare one , I just want to use this opportunity to teach my self better injector servicing .

Stay tuned ! you'll laugh , you'll cry , you'll wonder why the hell I do all this .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Injector Service

O.K. Sarracho ;

Yes , you can remove and re install them .

No , you MUST NOT TAKE THEM APART AND TRY TO CLEAN THEM ! this is because they're calibrated very finely and this calibration will be disturbed when you open them up plus a tiny bit of dirt smaller than a human hair will screw them  up .

You'll need a 27MM socket , for the injector proper , if you post a clear photo of the injectors I'll tell you the correct SEARS Craftsman # , or I can give you the E-Bay # for a nice one I bought that's not very expen$ive .

If you have the old Mercedes tool kit go look in it until you find the 17MM wrench , it looks cheesy but decidedly it is NOT ~ wire brush all the rust off it until you can rub a clean white paper towel and get no color on the towel then use that to loosen all 8 of the injector pipe nuts , loosen only then unscrew them all by hand and DO NOT LIFT THE PIPES until all 8 nuts are loose and able to be lifted up and away from their threads .

More later , you'll be wanting at least one can of Aerosol starting fluid to clean things with , some clean light colored heavy paper towels or well washed old thrift store towels .

Once you have all four injectors out , they need to go to a Diesel Shop , one that had the blue and white BOSCH INJECTOR SERVICE sign on it . they're not terribly expen$ive to have serviced/rebuilt .

If you're in So. Cal. I know a good place .

DO NOT skimp nor skip steps in Injector servicing else your car may be ruined beyond repair ! .

No kidding , YOU can do it but gently and ever so carefully .

I have to go now but I'll be chancking back and will assist in any way I can just like the good folks here did for me years ago .

'K ? .

Don't worry , soon your 'Benz will be purring again .

I did change my fuel filter. The fuel lines and tank was professionally cleaned about a year ago. They are probably the original. It's not getting very much power, smoking, rough idle. So I thought I would try to clean them myself!

Nice pic , doesn't show the injectors ~ what do you want to do here ? .

We'll walk you through it , not terribly difficult but you must be gentle and careful here , Okay ? .
