The good news - you do not have find a 41 Chevy.

Your favorite auto part store can probably find a no pressure cap for you.

On a Datsun  truck, I used a pressure relief cap and kept it in the "release pressure" lever position.


This is the one for my MB - your mileage may be different:

My old NA Coupe suffered this and the only way I was able to stop the constant coolant leaks in the footwell was to run a non pressure radiator cap from a '41 Chevy .

No , it never overheated nor did it begin using coolant , it just bugged the hell out of me knowing it wasn't right .

Once the pressure was relieved , the Aluma Seal was sufficient to staunch the leak .

The heater core is the first thing on the assembly line.  They then build the car around it.  I have a complete core assembly from a 1982 240D if you can't find one locally.  I'm in Cornwall on Hudson, NY.  Price would depend on what it looks like when I get it out of my parts rack.  Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the repair advice. If I didn't find a donor today, I'd be looking for other options. I did found a car at the PAP, and took the fuel line off for $11. I then bought a new fuel filter, as the fuel line attaches to the filter. It works, so the wife is happy. (me too)

I didn't see too much in the way of MBs at the PAP in Stanton, CA.
No 123s over there, though a few newer ones. (124 & 126 in believe)
No Metros either.

Now, back to driving around in the MB.

AutoZone (and others) sell fuel line repair kits, consisting of lengths of the hard plastic tubing and barbed connectors made of brass.  They're about $15 around here:

line and heat shrink it yourself using a torch/ heat gun. Has anyone
done this type of thing? I may just go to the PAP and find a used one,
yet new might be better. Thanks

    Many heat guns have an accessory fitting that is simply a sheet metal piece that fits over the output end, and has a bit of metal in a 'u' shape that goes around the wire and heat shrink being heated.  This allows the heatshrink to get heated all around, while keeping the heat from blowing past the heat shrink and melting nearby plastic. 
 
    We used these in servicing tiny circuity inside complex gear and huge power cables, so the fittings come in various sizes. 
 
    WAY WAY better and SAFER than trying to do anything with a torch.  And, you could make the same deal by fold heavy duty aluminum foil, or double layered aluminum foil, or a mangled bit of aluminum pie plate (how many of us have aluminum foil food packaging lying around at this time of year?!). 
 
    Also, for people who don't have a heat gun lying around, your wife's, girlfriend's or boyfriend's hair drier will work just as well on heat shrink tubing.

The buzz was right near the speedo, yet didn't change when I slowed down or sped up. I'll wait until I hear it again, to figure it out, as it only lasted from OC to Pasadena, then stopped for the rest of the trip.

I'll peek around the OC PAPs to see if there's any metros & MBs.

Was it from the speedo binnacle or elsewhere ? .

As you're just down the road from the various Long Beach P-A-P's , I'd suggest going to one for the fuel tube .

Maybe I'll get lucky and talk Tom into going to - morrow before the rain starts , there's supposedly a Metropolitan Nash Coupe in one .

Your right on discussing this before trying it. I would be careful
using a torch on a fuel line. I believe someone tried that a few months
ago on an oil rig. Your Volvo may go Vavoom.

Can you cut the lines further back and add new fuel lines/hoses?

We spent the holidays up at my folks place by Yosemite, though didn't go
into the park as it was snowing pretty hard up there. We were at 3000ft,
so a bunch of rain, and some sleet. The MB made the drive quite well,
though the heater never got very hot. I'm guessing the thermostat is
staying open, as it seemed to be running a little cool. Any other things
to look for? There was also a high pitched buzz coming from the dash
instrument panel, which lasted about 40 mins, in the beginning of the
trip. I have no idea what it was, and luckily it didn't return. The buzz
wasn't tied to the speed, so I don't think it was the speedo cable, yet
what else could it be?

warm water on the windows to get the ice off. The way down the mountain
had some ice patches, yet not too bad, and the traffic was pretty good
