Re: [diesel_mercedes] 16 inch wheels on W126

Larry,

Many current cars come with dinky spares.  I don't think that is your case.  I think the spare is the factory size.  But I like the idea of going to larger sizes.

I think the likely problem is that the front tires will rub on extreme turns - does it?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] any advice on door seals?

Put them out in the sun so they get soft and pliable. You can use baby talc (or soapy water) to get them to seat. Make sure all of the crud from the old seal is removed. This is a good time to do any other door issues too. I posted pics under Brians xyz when I did mine. After market rubber can be less than wonderful, so before you seal things down, I would open and close the door 10 or 12 times to make sure you get a good fit. The sealant (in my opinion) does not need to be applied in gobs, as a thin bead works fine.

I don't want to strip out what i have until i have an idea what i should be doing and of course i don't want to ruin and waste the nice parts i got.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] nice surprise

hi Boyd.
from which car, do you need said surround?
I think it's good on both 123's, if I understand what you want.

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Auto

No AC this tank , Startron used .

420 miles , 25.6 MPG , consistent as usual .

Maybe when I'm old , I'll drive at or near 55 MPH and see how much that raises the fuel mileage .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: HVAC Fan Brushes

Dangit ~

I wrote a long post and yahoo ate it =8-^ .

Anyway , I ordered up the new brushes from Mercedes Source.whatever because there are no longer " House Of Brushes " anywhere to be found.

Time was , anywhere in America , I'd go to the neqarest city and simply match up my old brushes for like .50 CENTS each , no longer .

NAPA still has a huge selection of Alternator , Generator and Electric Motor brushes but , you have to look at the pictures and kinda - sorta guesstimate which ones you want , no application guide .

Mercedes Source has 31 pages of W-123 parts , I read them all and ordered a couple more things I needed and made notes of yet more parts I'll order as I need them most notably TD parts , bits & bobs .

RockAuto.com also has the fan motor new aftermarket , about 1/8th the price Mercedes gets , I'd rather fix my original one if I can .

They have Amber (European Spec.) parking light lenses cheaply so I bought some and will see how bad the quality is ~ Ken says they suck but they're cheap and I have two Euro Spec W-123's now .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Trunk & Fuel Flap Locked Out

Remove rear seat , find the yellow plastic tube with the _green_ stripe and pull it out from underneath the _FRONT_ seat , suck on it and the trunk and fuel flap will unlock .

To open only the trunk , turn the key counter clockwise until it's at an angle and _hold_ it there as you push in the key & button , this unlocks vacuum locked trunks .

Then you can *gently* pull the right black plastic trunk side panel inwards enough to slide your hand in , find the fuel flap lock rod and pull it rear wards to unlock the fuel filler flap .

No need to panic .

Not sure the question ~

The spare is O.K. , don't leave it on any longer than you need to .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] locks not working no vacuum

Hmm....  Interesting dilemma.  Interesting, because both the trunk and fuel door locks are spring loaded to default to open.  In other words, you need vacuum to LOCK them, and the lack of vacuum will leave them open.

Probably the vacuum switch mechanism in the driver's door has either gone bad or become disconnected from the door lock/latch.

You should still be able to get into the trunk using the key.  Insert the key into the trunk button, twist it clockwise, and push in the trunk button.  Pulling up on the individual door lock buttons should unlock the doors.

[diesel_mercedes] fuel flap

Fuel flap locking devise The third photo, the devise mentioned in the owners manual If for any reason the lock doesn't allow you to open the flap then:- Open the flap marked for the first aid kit, O/S there you will find the hatch that allows access to the rear light cluster. Remove the oval felt pad & place your hand with caution due to sharp edges into the access between the body panel and the boot lining, moving your hand towards the filler flap or following the yellow pipe, incidentally the connection onto this unit is the same as on the headlight remote adjusters. The devise photographed is at the far end of that pipe, do not pull on the pipe, it is not the release mechanism. To release the flap pull the PIN towards you. Job done
