[diesel_mercedes] Neighbors

Remember when I grumbled about the druggie neighbors side swiping my Diesel Sports Coupe then driving off ? .

Or the several times they side swiped my old trucks and broke the mirrors ? . (this was a while back) .

Then , about the time I had my surgery , I discovered my grille & Christmas wreath was all bashed in from them backing into it ? .

I'm just now able to drive again since 12/18/13 , my Coupe has been safely in the garage , I took it out to - day and decided to remove & discard the smashed illuminated wreath.......

I cut the plastic zip ties but still couldn't get it off so I opened the hood ~ OH SHOOT ! =8-0 ~ they bashed it *so* hard ,they shattered the AC fan and bent the AC condenser like a banana , popped the upper radiator mounts loose so the fan blade tips wore a hole through my *perfect* shroud......

Amazingly the AC still blows cold and no coolant leaks . (thank you M-B Engineers)

I ordered up a buncha new parts to - day , I can't hardly wait to see how much $ this is going to co$t me , remember : I'll have to evacuate and re - charge the whole system , this means a new receiver - dryer plus some more R-12 too.....

I love this car but wonder why it is that of the whole neighborhood , why is it only _my_ cars & trucks get hit ever ? .
Life in The Ghetto , it's not all fun & games .

[diesel_mercedes] RE: help?

_WELL_ under $2K I hope as I looked at a few of these in VGC for about $1,200 .

I know the manual tranny is nice but in truth the next owner will use it to constantly overspeed and ruin the engine in short order .

Sounds like maybe a decent college car at the right price .

as follows:

Attention diesel people (you know who you are!), Selling my 84 190d, has
a 5 cylinder 2.5 engine transplant & 5 speed tranny, 15" wheels, newer
headlights, ok tires, good brakes, new ignition key tumbler, ball
joints, new glo plugs, shocks r good, no wrecks -clean title - a well
maintained, 35mpg car, OK interior. About 290K miles on car, 210K on
engine..upgrades/engine/transmission replacement done for
driveability!!! ..the power windows work, sunroof works, heat works but
ac needs to be connected, but it was working before the 5 cylinder
engine was installed - so it is easily fixable- it runs great, would
drive it anywhere as it sits, goes 70mph + up the grade on the 14 fwy.
Cosmetically car is OK+, has a little clearcoat peel, yellow paint,
little dings, etc..interior is mb tex, and is complete, but old. the car
drives straight and smoke is minimal (normal- no blowby). Keeps up with
modern traffic, won't win drag races, but way better than the 4 cylinder
190d, and the 5 speed is really what the Germans had in mind when they
made this car. XLNT commuter transportation, I am 2nd owner (I think),
have put about 140K on this car commuting back n forth from palmdale to
LA for work. Selling because I just bought a Golf TDI and I also have an
87 190d 2.5 turbo so I have too many cars right now. if interested just
call to get the whole story on the car - its a good car, not perfect,
but I have kept this car in pretty good shape for the last 3 years I've
owned it. Not too many of these cars out there, and most are automatic,
and 2.2 engine - this one rides great - so call mike ..car is currently
with my mechanic in Fontana, near intersection of 15 and 10 fwys - will
show by appt...calling is better than emailing!! phone number is

[diesel_mercedes] 1971 220D For Parts

Mike ;

Even in the Mojave Desert these ones you have rust out . sad but true .

They're very good runners , hang in there and you might find a decent one in time .

Not much resale nor parts value but if you like the car , well worth restoring IMO .
I have an owner's booklet for one I salvaged twenty years ago thinking I'd find one in time .

[diesel_mercedes] Excess Tanny ATF Use

It only weeps & seeps a little bit , I'm not sure where it all goes Brain ;

I'm pretty sure it's never een rebuilt , a few years ago it stopped going into fourth gear so I had Victor look at it , I told him to go ahead and rebuild it , do the B2 servo upgrade blah blah blah but he just did a bunch of adjustments for $150 and ignored the weeps & seeps , I always know when it's getting low because the normally overly soft up shifts get worse and occasionally flare , this cause me to stop RIGHT DANG NOW and check then top up the ATF level .

I wish I had the $ to have both the engine and tranny overhauled because in the end I really do like this one best of all the ones I've had or have .
BTW : Tom hipped me to a place in Goleta , Ca. that says they can fix my broken glovebox door wood but I'd like to give it one last try before driving  up there , I dimly remember others here mentioning there's a specific method of prep and glue to use .

       Brain Queried :

Is the tranny "using" ATF, or are you just leaking it from some source like a bolt hole or gasket?

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Glove Box Wood Glue ?

I always try 4 or 5 glues on "test" parts first to see what works. From hot glue gun, to "goop", to epoxy, to other stuff(s). Depends if you want to take it apart in the future, or want it to last for 1000 years.

[diesel_mercedes] Glove Box Wood Glue ?

O.K. , it was loose and I managed to break it off , I test fitted it and it'll look O.K. but so far it has resisted all glues , what should I try to glue the wood to the metal backing strip ? .

I have cleaned the metal off but not yet the old glue on the wood piece .

TIA ,

[diesel_mercedes] instrument cluster lighting improvement project update

Hi all:

I finally had an opportunity to use the car during night time hours.
I don't have words to describe how much better it is now than with the factory instrument cluster lights. I can actually read the odometers if I want to. The difference is, in a very real way, the difference between night and day.

Bogy.
