Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rainy Dayze

Of the many times I've been to the L. A. area, the best times have been when it's raining.  L.A. shines in the rain....

It's been raining in California and I got tired of being cooped up in my little house and so drove down into scary South MacArther Park / Koera Town Los Angles in my trusty old Diesel Sports Coupe this afternoon, had some delicious Howard's Chicken and then decided to meander home via surface streets ~ I drove throuh Rampart, of that old L.A.P.D. Rampart Division (now on Temple Street) crime squad ,any decades ago .

It's interesting to see so many single family homes in very nice shape jammed check to jowl with tenement buildings, residential hotels , burned out shops and so on .

Plenty of normal happy people of all races and social stations walking the streets and going about their business .

Some fierce  potholes, mostly caused by the rain I imagine, not too much traffic on a late Saturday afternoon .

The car loves the weather ~ the crisp throttle response and lack of exhaust smoke plus the smoothness of the engine attests to that, it soaks up the rippled pavements, bumps and pot holes I don't see in time very well indeed and is sure footed never slipping / sliding one bit .

In time I decided to leave the Big City and find a clean toilet and free WiFi, this took me on the NB i5 freeway that was completely empty due to flooding having closed the entire NB i5 just South of downtown L.A. so a few cars and I sprinted carefully (60 MPH) up the open road, the rain downtown was very light, going up the hill into the San Gabriel Valley it began to rain heavy enough to use the wipers a bit (LOVE Rain-X !) and pass most of the traffic yet still feel well planted and safe .

Most Hobby/Collector Car folks never drive in inclement weather , I used to quite a bit and realized I missed it .

Good to know the old Mercedes with close to 1/2 a million miles on it still makes the grade .

I never worry about the guy who puts in my windshields.  He is extremely competent with enormous experience, and treats each of my cars as if they are his own.  Because they are....

I went out and checked for leaks during today's rain, to see if I could tell why my floorboards were wet last rain, and yes, it seems to be coming from the windshield. It leaked when I wasn't even driving my MB today; wet floorboards, only a small amount of water in the front, though some water in the lower corner of the window seal.

Those idiot window guys who put my windshield in twice, as it was off center the first time, seemed to have damaged the MB seal. It's coming up on 4 yrs, yet the factory MB seal should have lasted longer. These older gasket windows are much different than the current glue on ones, so make sure the guys you have replacing your windshield know what they're doing.

There are drains in the front corners and basically at about the rear of the sunroof opening.  You can try to use a long flexible rod of some kind, or a small thermonuclear device. But before you go that far, open the sunroof and carefully pour some water in the side channels outside the tracks.  If water runs out under the car you have a different problem.  As was previously suggested another possibility is leakage around the windshield or the area under the battery plate.

OK, listen real careful. I'm on my 9th
Mercedes 123 bodystyle
and every single one
has had a leak of some kind when I first bought
them. So here's the ones I've found so
far in my experience:

1.
Sunroof. Most common. Usually clogged drain holes in the top
like
the other guys have mentioned. Prone
b/c of leaves, straw, etc
getting there and
people not cleaning them out. You can tell real
quick by watering down the sunroof (open or
closed) and if it's
clogged, the water
will back up and then drain unseen down the front
pillars and appear in your floorboards.
