[diesel_mercedes] Delco R4 AC Compressor

Actually Mark ;

I was still doing AC repairs when the R4 was current fitment on various GM cars and it worked very well most of the time, took less power to run than the old R6 pump did and apart from leaky ceramic shaft seals they worked admirably .

I know of many old Mercedes' and GM cars that have well over 100,000 miles on their R4 compressors, still going strong .

In those days the watchword was "NO ONE does AC like The General !" .

I agree, if it doesn't leak I should find an honest and capable AC  shop and have them flush the system then properly evacuate it and re charge correctly .

There's your problem...
R4 pumps were junk from new. GM's answer to cheapening the old A-6, probably the best pump ever made.
Seeing as how it's proving to be pretty leak-proof, you should be able to take it to most an qualified shop with AC service and get is sucked down and recharged.
The government recently re-introduced freon sale regulation, so you can't buy your own anyways.
