[diesel_mercedes] Re: Going Crazy Here.....(Motocycles)

Some corrections here :

#1 : Scooters have tiny, 8" wheels and so have totally different riding dynamics , I have seen many crash and those who know them have told me they're worried I'll want to ride a Scooter too fast and so crash it .

#2: : _I'm_ the guy who lobbied endlessly and relentlessly until the V.J.L.A. tried riding tiny little Motos to Death Valley, they all had standard if very skinny Motocycle wheels and tires . I LOVE tiny Motocycles, am not sure about Scooters . no 'fast & loose' with any terms here .

Brendan, a decades long Scooter Enthusiast, once rode a classic Scooter to Death Valley and had a whale of a good time .

He tends to ride a bit slower than I do, this is an important distinction to me as I've witnessed too many Motocycle crashes and deaths up close and personal, not talking about my mishaps here, others . point being : I try to ride safely and conservatively .

Yes, I made a serious mistake in not recognizing how tired I was when I saddled up for that last, short, fateful ride that didn't -quite- make it home .

I've been riding and driveing long distances for decades now and I have no problems stopping for a nap anytime I feel tired .

I mis judged and that was a mistake that could have cost me my life .

I'm ready to die at any given moment yes but I'm _NOT_ in any hurry ! .

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated here .

Let's not play fast and loose with terms here.  What is the "mistake" you hope not to repeat?

You went out for a ride.  Was that a mistake?  It turned into a LOOOONG ride, because you were having fun.  Was that a mistake?  You fell asleep.  Was that a mistake?

The first doesn't seem like a mistake.  If it was, that is EXACTLY what you are talking about repeating.

The second might be a mistake, depending on circumstances.  But not necessarily.

The third sounds like a natural bodily reaction to fatigue.  Again, not a mistake.

It sounds like making a mistake to automatically dismiss all smaller bikes as "patently and inherently dangerous scooters."  It sounds like creating a definition of bikes that you don't want to ride as "dangerous" to justify the choice you want to make.

Most of the bikes that go on the annual VJLA ride to Death Valley are smaller than the Ural you want.

The general hope is I won't repeat that mistake .

If I do then that's that : I'll either die or live .

Jr. says he doesn't want me on another full size Bike but it'O.K. if I ride a patently and inherently dangerous scooter.....

I think I'll just mull it over a few dayze, as Tom mentions I can't really afford it but I do want to ride again A.S.A.P. .

"You say "ugh" to the color, and say you can't afford it.  And you still hobble around from the last crash."Crazy"?  Yes."

So I'm looking at used ones I might could possibly afford.....

? Whatchu think of this ? :

It's the same year and model that I crashed on last year, different color (ugh) but if I can squeeze them down to $3,000.00 (that's a LOT of $ for me) I think I can swing it and it has very few miles....

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check & Bottom Buster Notes

3.11.2018 2PM . 1982 Mercedes 240D Slushbox, no additives used, some AC .

Low fuel lamp on @ 453 miles, filled up @ 455, 27.4 MPG .

This is the highest I've gotten since rebuilding the engine .

In the 2,000 + miles it has used just under 2 quarts of oil and no ATF, I am well pleased .

The day was cool, 77* F is the maximum I've hit to - day .

@ 60 ~ 65 MPH the engine just _hums_, silky smooth like I think it should be .

I adjusted the hot idle up a little bit, can't find my infrared tachometer, when I do I'll set it to 750 RPM's and hopefully it'll smooth right out @ hot idle .

Still a tiny weeping of fuel at the #4 cylinder delivery valve on the I.P., Carlos asked me to let him re seal it to insure no worries with the warranty on the freshly overhauled I.P. ~ sounds right to me *:-B nerd .

Lots and lots of Farms and fields being prepared for Farming, a good thing I think .

I arrived in Brawley, Ca. @ 1:30PM and filled my tank, local Diesel is $3.50 ~ $3.79, a the place I filled up at said $3.49 on the sign but charged me .10 cents more, no worries .

Nice quiet town here, friendly people, I met several fellow travelers and local retirees within minutes .

To - morrow Death Valley awaits ! *:x lovestruck .
