[diesel_mercedes] RE: Transmission Woes

Off the top of my head, this sounds like a B2 piston failure--abrupt loss of forward gears, but reverse works fine.  Here's a nice little write-up about symptoms and repairs.  If it's a B2 problem, the good news is that the transmission can be fixed without removing it from the car.

that is interesting. I wonder why it does it more in the cold.

Starter. All of mine did this, except the 59 190D. I replaced with a lifetime starter, works fine 99% of the time, but on rare occasions still does what you describe. It will eventually start.Up here in the cold north, it seems to do this more when it's cold. Max

well it only does it on the 3rd try when starting in the cold.  Maybe the battery is too low at this point. Also I don't have the proper battery with the proper cold cranking amps..

You could have a place on the flywheel that is missing a tooth. If the starter gear finds that spot, it’ll whir but has nothing to grab and turn the flywheel by.

It could be that the starter gear is not going forward enough to engage the flywheel. This could be a weak starter solenoid, or a battery that is getting low. Bill in Oregon

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: door seal

Aftermarket rubber parts, especially weatherstripping, will never fit properly. Price them out before you buy.

[diesel_mercedes] DIY sources

Here are "some" of the DIY locations I use, but not all, when doing repairs. Maybe some of you have others you would add to the list:

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Re: Diesel Giant

Diesel Giant tells me that my order is on its way.

My concern was mainly that I would get to Tacoma before the stuff. We have quite a few parts waiting there already, I have time in Mazatlan to work on the car between margaritas.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: door seal

Apparently URO Parts supplies most of the parts houses we buy from with after market parts, especially if they involve rubber ingredients (think Thailand for rubber & cheaper labor). brian
