Re: [diesel_mercedes] More Junkyard Fun !

1) I turn the engine in the direction of its normal rotation until it is at 24.5 degrees btdc with the #1 piston near the top of its compression stroke. There are timing markings on the front pulley for this.

2) since the pump is out of the car all the steel lines will be off the pump outlets.

3) attach a fuel supply of some kind to the pump inlet and turn the pump in it's normal direction until all the outlets squirt some amount of fuel. do this with wide open throttle.

4) Then use a lint free towel or cloth to soak all but a small bit of fuel from the #1 outlet - until there is just a small little bit in the bottom of the outlet fitting. enough to see but not much more.

5) Turn the pump in its normal direction until you just see a change in the fuel level in the aforementioned #1 outlet fitting. Do this at idle throttle setting. Turn it slow and watch it carefully. The little puddle will just start to grow as the port is beginning to deliver fuel.  This is the start  of delivery for the #1 cylinder.

6) without disturbing the shaft, install the pump.

Note. there is a set of alignment marks that you could use to align the gear with the pump body. But it's a good idea to ensure that as the marks line up,  the fuel puddle in the #1 delivery port is also just starting to change.

I use the six steps above to check timing as well as set it.  with the pump still in the car remove the #1 fuel line and turn the crank until the timing marks come to 24.5 degrees before top dead center. You should see the fuel puddle in the delivery outlet just begin to rise at 24.5 degrees btdc.

Hope this helps.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] More Junkyard Fun !

Confirming my impression that in addition to seismic faults there is a magnetic field that sucked all of the old MBs to California.  There are very few left in scrapyards on the East Coast.  Anyway, I seem to remember timing a 123 Diesel a long time ago.  I was using the fsm but no electric pump.  As I remember it involved adjusting the timing so that a small drip of fuel dropped out of a short pipe screwed into the #1 cylinder feed on the pump.  Hopefully someone with either better information or a better memory can provide some more accurate help.

I spent two days afternoons removing an Injection Pump from an 1985 W-126 300SD , I plan to try it in my '84 300CD as it still smokes and I've replaced everything else....

It'll prolly turn out the IP is mis-timed but I want to teach myself how to properly time the IP anyway....

Suggestions or details on how to do it @ home gratefully accepted .

I read in the FSM I'm supposed to connect up an electric fuel transfer pump ? .- Nate

That came out nice. I just took one to the local DIY car wash. They have a low pressure soaper that I used, and all looks good so far.

I've been working on old cars since I was in short pants and German cars since the late 1960's , I'm ' Yankee Thrifty ' (cheap) so I try to use the good stuff whenever it's important and keeping the water out , even here in the Desert ir paramount if you want it to last .

I don't see many 110's in the junkyards , keep hunting though .

Thanks for your input Nate. Tom has been recommended a few times now so I'm almost certain I'll get my parts from him.

Dexter ;

I've been a German car mechanic for over 40 years and I can tell you one thing for certain :

ALWAYS use the OEM German made rubbers ! at the very least on the windshield and back glass grommets .

I know the price differential is large but trust me here ~ the cheaper ones don't last long and after they begin to leak in a tear or two in spite of always parking inside your garage so they don't get much sun , you'll be seriously P.O.'d .

I see someone else had already posted Tom's E-mail , also a like to Peach Parts who also sells original Mercedes rubber , Tom @ The Classic Center will be the better price once you figure in shipping and it'll be faster and fresher too .

I'm a (damn) Yankee Farm Boy born and bred so when I get up off a dime , you can believe it's well worth every penny .
