If the glow plug light comes on (or flashes) after the car has started, then at least one glow plug is not working. On mine ('79 300SD, W116), if just one plug isn't working, it takes a lot of cranking before it will start, followed by a lot of smoke.
Definately a glow plug problem.

My son in law has been driving it so I'm not sure about the oil. Don't think it uses much. Also don't think throttle is depressed unless it appears to not be starting. I will verify these q's. One thing I have not done is verify the glow plug wiring harness. Power may not be getting to the plugs. The glow light does go off before attempting to start, but after car is started, it comes back on and stays on. Ever seen that? Thanks for the ideas.
