[diesel_mercedes] Another Fine Day In The Desert [3 Attachments]

The Annual Stateline Supermoto Racing Event was this weekend and lucky me ! I got invited to Babysit my Grand Daughter when Jr. and Michelle were out racing to - gether .

Penny is a bit camera shy but I managed to snap a few Pix .

#1 is Penny playing with her new Pan Pipes from Peru, I bought them a week or two ago and gave them to her to aliveate any boredom this weekend .

Pic.# 3 is the entire Family relaxing between races .

The racing is amazing ! mostly small displacement Motos, 150 C.C. +/-  , lots of kids as well as old guys like me and plenty of Ladies too ! .

Going wayyyyy too fast for my tastes but then, I'm not out there riding so that's moot .

I ran over to Boulder City after the racing stopped Sunday afternoon @ 2PM, of course my fuel filters got plugged up with what looked like _COFFEE GROUNDS_ *~X( at wits' end.

At the time I was blasting down an old poorly maintained road that suddenly stopped about three miles from my hotel....... (insert head banging here) so I had to reverse my travel and back track, the low fuel lamp was lit for over 60 miles, good thing I was carrying two gallons of spare fuel, I never did use it .

I went 406 miles and used 20 gallons of K100 treated Dino based Diesel fuel, my calculator tells me this was only 19.8 MPG (sad face here) although a goodly bit of the miles driven was foot on the floor and some 100 + MPH runs .

I arrived back just as the sun was setting and they were packing up, they're to leave early to - morrow morning .

All the people at the Race rack seemed to like my old Mercedes, old or young .

Penny was happy to have my Brother and I doting on her every wish all day Saturday and 1/2 day Sunday when Tom had to bug out because the freeway was jammed from North of us all the way to San Bernadino .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Separating Taper Fit Joints

OK, thanks for the lesson. Max

No, Max ;

It _isn't_ splitting hairs and it shouldn't take major force to separate a taper fit joint .

That was my entire point .

Much older vehicles used taper fits to hold brake drums to axles, flywheels to crank shafts and so on ~ high torque force applications where brute force separating would damage bearings and other internal parts .

Thats splitting hairs. OK, the taper is right above the threads. It makes a very snug fit and takes a lot of persuasion to come apart. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Traveling

Well, yesterday I traveled from Puyallup over the Snoqualmie Pass to the Tri Cities area where the Snake River and the Columbia River join and had lunch. I guess I should have invited Max but I was with other people. Next week I will change out #2 and #5 glow plugs in Martha as it looks like I will need all 5 plugs glowing in Washington. At the end of April I fly back to Ontario to pick up Mary who is getting new hoses, belts, plugs, etc. so she can make the trip too. Blew a tire outside Red Bluff, CA at 2:00am and AAA showed up 20 minutes later. Had to unload all my hardware and tools from the trunk so they could get to the spare - that was worse that the blow out. Took the car to Walmart the next day for a new tire, and they replaced my very good right front tire, leaving my blown out tire in the trunk (or boot of you wish). I caught it one hour later, and miraculously they said the used tire truck had just collected all of the old tires and taken them to Tire Heaven. After some haggling and finger pointing I got another (discounted) tire. Can hardly wait to get all the tools and parts unloaded from both cars so I can see what I have and store them properly.
