Geez I'd need more than shade if it got THAT hot! I'd not be living here! It's too hot for me and I grew up in AZ. Yeah, yeah, laugh if you want, but it IS a dry heat out there! It's so humid and hot here even when I had a pool I didn't even get near it in Aug. I froze a 5 gallon bucket of water then put it in the pool. It took 7 minutes to melt it! Summer starts a lot sooner here than LA. When I lived in Burbank, summer didn't get there till July. It's hot here in May. By July I don't want to go outside after 9am!
This is an amazing winter! Shhh the global warming people will have a field day with this weather! Today it was a t-shirt and sweats...only so I can hike along our creek and keep "most" of the mud from the jumping dogs off of me. LOVE IT! This time last year I lost 4 days of work due to the weather. My boss didn't even open the store 2 days because we couldn't get it warmer than 52 and all of our customers were complaining. When I was able to go in my heater didn't warm up a bit 2x! I was frozen by the time I drove the 30 minutes to work. That should have been a warning that the thermostat was bad, but it didn't click with our brains till the car over heated 2x when it was 115! Oh joy! Had to wait over an hour for Kevin to come tow me home.
I don't shade my garden. I didn't have one last summer...thankfully, with no rain and over 100 temps for well over a month. I did a raised bed the year before. I gave up my garden area for more dog pens, so I'm starting all new this year. I'm putting it closer to the former rabbit barn so it'll be easier to scoop all of the poop and use it in the beds.
You will probably need something like this for the summer when it gets up 140 degrees. But 70's in the winter are nice? Do you have to shade your garden at all? Max
