[diesel_mercedes] 84 300D turbo

Thanks to you guys that helped with the starter. It took 3 long extensions and a medium with a swivel. We attached this to a 3/4 inch breaker bar and was on the road in about 2 hours. Sweet.

Next question. Adjusted the valves about 3K miles ago. Decided to put on a new valve cover gasket while I was there. Mistake, this things leaks like a cut pig. Have reset it and retightened it. Lots of oil. Did I recently see this addressed. Did someone say only use a MB factory gasket or was that another thread. Could not find that message.

Help, tire of the mess.

Thanks, Nick

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Dammit

On reusing the pistons, I'm not sure on the MBs, yet I had a '70
Kawasaki H1 500 (triple) that would wear in the cylinders after racing
around for a few years, or if the oil injector pump went out. I found it
was cheaper to find used barrels and have them bored, then get the next
sized pistons, as I had already bought the 1 size up pistons, and they
seemed fine. The center cylinder was especially prone to getting worn
out, so it was replaced a few more times then the outer ones.

I did have a long conversation with a shop in Belmont, CA, (up on the SF peninsula), about re-sleeving the engine, they'd done several. Said that you can usually re-use the stock pistons, which I regarded with a bit of suspicion.. Never needed to get the work done, still have a full set of sleeves, though.
