I'd kill to own a W123 just for that fact alone!
These cars were built in an era where all you needed to work on them was
a set of ROE (Ring/Open End) spanners, a pair of pliers, a set of
screwdrivers, a socket set and a set of Allen keys.... they had no
computers, no worrisome common rail direct injection, no sensors on
every part of the engine. They were simple, meat and vegetable kinds of
cars which had a certain charm about them, and they still do to this
day! A friend of mine had a 1982 W123 300D with an automatic
transmission - he ended up selling it and I wish I knew then as I'd have
brought it off him! His 300D was originally a diplomatic car, owned by
the Australian High Commissioner to Mozambique and had a mega low
130,000 kilometres on it when he owned it (according to the car's
service manual). Yes, the manuals were still with the car at the time -
which confirmed it's absolute originality to me. The OM617 did not even
leak a ounce of oil - looked at it and it was immaculate!
Finding a good condition W123 in Australia is a little harder than
finding a later model Mercedes-Benz diesel - for the fact that a lot of
them have already been restored!
