Re: [diesel_mercedes] When do glow plugs go off?

As Bobby and Brian have said, the plugs will continue to get power for about 15-seconds after the light in the dash goes out.  This is normal.

Your car originally came with series-wired plugs.  This is indicated by heavy, flat "loop wires" with no insulation on them connecting from one plug to the next, the end of the circuit at the frontmost cylinder grounded to the head using a small, braided strap.  In the dark, these heavy wires give off a faint, orange glow when the plugs are getting powered.  Many of these cars have been converted to the parallel plugs over the years.  These will have 16-ish guage, insulated wires going from the outside threaded connector tip of one plug to the next, with the ground wire disconnected or removed at the end of the circuit (these plugs are internally grounded).  If this is what you have, and you are checking resistance without disconnecting the wire from each plug in turn so as to remove it from the circuit, you could be getting a false indication.  Just one good plug out of five will give a low resistance reading for the entire circuit if all remain connected.

Resistance is about 2 to 5-ohms, depending on the sensitivity of the ohmmeter.  In general, 0 ohms, or close to it, is good; infinite ohms are bad (open).  I've yet to find any plug that was in-between (certainly possible, though), so, from what I've seen, it's one or the other.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] When do glow plugs go off?

Hello All

In my 1978 300D the glow plugs are powered after the light goes off.
I think they are in parallel a circuit so they may be the faster plugs.

How long should they stay on?

If I am using my ohm meter correctly there are zero ohms resistance on the plugs. I will have a friend check the resistance. in case I am wrong.

Could the plugs staying on cause the plugs to burn out and have no resistance? (the car will not start)

Where is the glow plug relay? I looked at pictures on ebay but can not find it.

thank you
Rodger

When we first bought our MCI Bus, there were no dash lights, I used to use a flashlight.
Don't usually drive after dark, but last night I found that the dash lights were badly in need of Nate to solder the dimmer and swap the bulbs.

[diesel_mercedes] Going for a drive!

We decided today to go to Mazatlan for the winter, we thought it only fair that we let the Mercedes bask in the sun too. Gonna drive from BC (nr Max's hideaway) through the US & into Mexico. Figure it will take us 4 - 5 days driving time ( Nate would do it in 2) and some rest stops at friends and motels on the way. One side bene is that there are a couple of rust spots starting & I can get those fixed in Mazatlan, I know a really good bodyman. Looking forward to it, I just looove driving the Mercedes.
Wish us luck,
Tony

Re: [diesel_mercedes] When do glow plugs go off?

You can hear the "clunk" when relay shuts off indicating the glow plugs are hot enough to burn the fuel. Somewhere between 10 and 15 seconds. Don't pay any attention to the dash light, mine goes off earlier than it should. The sound of the "clunk" will never fail you.

Rodger,

Nate knows more than I.

The plugs can not have zero resistance, but their resistance is so low - 2 or 3 ohms - that a meter may report it as zero.

If the plug has burned out, it will have infinite resistance, in other words there is no connection between the shell of the plug and the stud sticking out for the power wire.

I have the impression they should stay on for about 10 seconds.  (My DPO replaced the official relay with an on - off relay, so I have to guess at mine.)

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Two issues and one comment.

The blocking of the trans oil lines by a hose reminds me of the time when I was thinking of blocking the leaking engine oil cooler lines off, but decided to replace them. On these the pressure is also too high to just use hose and clamps to disconnect them from the oil cooler.

I got tired of leaky vacuum at the door panels. So I just golf-teed the vacuum line from the brake booster to the door panels. Sure I can't lock my doors anymore (and have also disconnected the gas tank door vacuum), but I've never locked my car door in years. Nothing to steal in there. And no crook is gonna break a window glass to get in. He can just open the door.

Just making things simpler.

They're different for sure ! Mercedes even puts a paper tag with pictures of both types in the trunk , it might be underneath your spare tire .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : When do glow plugs go off?

The glow plug relay is inside the left front fender , it's a black plastic rectangular box with two wires connected to it , one is unfused battery current , the other one connects to the series wired glow plugs .

In your year Mercedes , if *one* glow plug burns out and goes open circuit , the rest stop working and the car becomes very difficult to start .

Replace all , not just one , if you find a dead one .

DO NOT use Kragen , Autozone , Pep Boys etc. champion or autolite glow plugs ! they're often bad right out of the box .

The windows locks are vacuum controlled. The window electrical circuit works off fuses and switches.

Water can get in the trans if the heat exchanger in the radiator starts leaking.  If this is the case you probably could also see signs of oil in the water.
