Get it good and hot , check the fluid then as it expands a lot as it warms up , top up as necessary then begin looking carefully for soft/ loose / fallen off vacuum hoses , there's one that goes from near the IP down to the right hand side of the tranny , if the tranny end gets wet with oil (it does) over time the rubber short bit of hose gets soft & blubbery , resulting in poor shifting and when the hose finally falls off , no shifting .
Take the time to check ALL the rubber hose bits your self as the ' Mechanic ' won't then he'll do some halfa$$ed thing when it can't be made right as long as one rubber hose is leaking anywhere on the car .
For this typ of checking , you need to raise the car so you can scrootch underneath it ~ I use a trolly jack and serious safety stands but if you're very careful , you can drive two wheels up a driveway edge so the car is angled up on the curb , this gives you plenty of room to get underneath .
WARNING ! this is a Farm / Bubba / Emergency trick and if the tires are only part way on the curbstone , the car can and will slip off and kill you .
I always make a point of finding a clean gutter for this , you can also sweep it clean first .

Especially what I call third gear above 38 mph. Checked engine and found a broken vacuum hose going to the alda. Replaced that, and the trans problem is still there.
