[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Automatic

402 miles , 26.2 MPG . NO AC use .

NO Statron , I ran out and wrote them asking where to buy ? .

The Starbrite web site has a store locator but it only shows " Autozone " FLAPS and they don't ever carry the gallon jugs , I _NEED_ it in gallons ! .

No Diesel Kleen either .

38° F this morning , I let the glow plugs cycle almost until the relay clicked (long after the light went off) and it started easily , no foot throttle necessary ~ I know my use of super thin synthetic engine oils helps not only easy cold Wx. starting but it also gets up out of the sump and circulates & begins lubricating faster .

I get heat in about 2 miles of gentle , 1/4 to 1/3 throttle driving .

I only allow idle long enough to put on my safety belt and adjust the radio , heater and lights then I move off slowly .

By the time I hit the Freeway the heat is blasting and I can safely wind it up to 80 + MPH  .

[diesel_mercedes] Stuck Thermostat Housing

That's normal Mike ;

Just grab your BIGGEST screwdriver and hold it by the tip & WHACK the housing with the handle , it'll pop loose .

Thanks. It seems I am either overheating and have to stop and cool down or running less than100 and the heater does not work.

Also I can't rove the top of the thermostat housing after removing the bolts.

Well, we got about 500 miles out of the brake pads but now they are toast, some friends are coming to stay in our hotel on Sunday, they are bringing new pads for all 4 corners. Just callled the flaps we ordered them from to ask them to double check the part numbers, all seems good.

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Engine Temp

Is your temp. gauge in Celsius or Fahrenheit ?

Many Mercedes are in Celsius so the ideal temp reading is around 80° C.

All my OM617's have 82° C thermostats and usually run right at 82° on the gauge .

It's been cool (high 30's / 40's ° F)  in The L.A. Basin the last week or so , my temp. gauge rarely reached 80° C but the heater blows plenty hot so it's good .

If you're not sure , run your car 30 minutes or so then try to wrap your hand & fingers around the upper radiator hose close to the engine .

I can do this but most think it's too hot ~ if the hose or thermostat housing is uncomfortably hot after 30 minutes driving in winter , you're running just fine no matter what the gauge says .

every benz that I have had has used c for dash temp They should run  at around 80c most of the time. I have seen 105c a few times with high ambient and ac on. At that time the elec fan should be coming on. Today it's 0 f here and it's runing at around 80 c

Diesels like it hot (just like our women) 100 degrees F. is way too cool. Should be running around 180 to 190 F, at least, I would think. Max

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Engine Temp

I would say 170 degrees F.

Look at the thermostat; it will have a number on it; hopefully with a C or F.  Bill

Sounds like the drs. sprayed WD40 on your joints as they were getting ready to sew you back up.
