Re: [diesel_mercedes] 81 240D Radiator

Sorry - I did not explain this well.

The system has an overflow tank integrated into it.  The tank is a separate part, mounted on the fender well.  If you get the radiator, you also need to get the overflow tank.

Brad,

I am not the expert, so take this with a grain of salt.

The Mercedes Turbo engines had an integrated overflow tank.  So get that when you get the radiator.  It will be difficult working out a place for it, etc.  But it will help your radiator do a better job, because it helps remove bubbles from the cooling system.

(On Ford pickups, the name for it reflects that it is removing bubbles.  Trying to adapt one form a Ford pickup would be difficult, but the one from a Mercedes Turbo should be easy to adapt and worth the effort.)

My 1981 240D needs a radiator. It has a manual transmission so I do not have to worry about tranny lines. The AC has not worked for decades so that is not an issue. The one and only Mercedes in the local pick a part is a 1983 300SD. Will that fit my 240? Did Mercedes do anything like change the location of the hose fittings.

Thanks, Brad

No problems, I put one of those in one of my 240's. I just screwed down the overflo tank on one of the wheel wells. Been in there for years, works great. Why not buy a new one? Why not find one with a copper top? I sure hate these plastic top radiators. Life sure is changing. I am glad I grew up before computers, I-pods, crappy cars and plastic top radiators. Hey Henry you are in a movie. We made a movie today and yer in it. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Passenger Side Mirror

Nate (and all),
"Miss Daisy" is a brand new (2/1974) 240D. I believe that makes it a 115. VIN# 115.117 10 027591 So if I have a chance of finding a pass side mirror it will probabily be an "early style" 'eh?

Mercedes manuals are always popular (with me), but what I really, really need is a passenger's outside mirror. Daisy has none and it drives me crazy when I have to back up. Location would be helpful.

[diesel_mercedes] Floor vent vacuum controller 84 300D

84 300D
I think the vacuum controller for the flap that controls air flowing under the dash into the floorboard area over my feet has crapped out. No matter what button I push on the controller, it never opens up. I was wondering how difficult it is to swap that vacuum element out - is it like the center vent job from hell or is it easier to get to? I think that it must be leaking vac because the car is taking longer to shut off now, it "diesels" for three seconds after key is turned off. Or maybe that is another problem.

Thanks!

Jim

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Evil Klima I Servos NEW IDEA for reliability

I would really like to see pix, parts and numbers from this job - thanks, Doug! One question I have though, does the monovalve just turn on and off or does it have intermediate settings depending on how much heat is needed? I don't understand how the heater air is made warm as opposed to full hot. Is it an air mix from an air flap and vacuum valve? Or is it the monovalve that controls how much coolant flows through the heater core? Thanks!

Jim

GENTS, As too heater cut of valves, too fully cut off coolant flow to the heater core,  there is a generic manual valve, used on anything the has a heater,  NAPA has them, less than $10, available in 5/8 or 3/4 hose size, coolant flow can be cut off by your fingers, as it has a small handle.   I have one on my '81 300d, just in case I get a leak, can shut it off under the hood very quickly.
I have bypassed all those flakey control valves, that quit long ago, an use this manual valve too completely shut off coolant flow during our blistering hot TEXAS Summers.
Also bypassed the electric coolant pump, as it has quit too.  A new hose straight to the heater core, from the engine, with the manual valve handy on top of the valves cover, an tied off with a tie wrap.
Will upgrade this later with a 80s Oldsmobile cable operated manual valve, an 80s GM pu trk dash AC / Heater control unit mounted in the place of the ash tray, to manually control the whole AC an heater system.
When I do that , will share all with group, including part numbers, an photos too, but its pretty darn simple to do. PAP has plenty of the GM truck dash control units, an the Olds cable control manual valve, I have a part number in my Suburban file.
