[Diesel-RVs] Re:oders

Yeah....I took out my washer/dryer, plugged the discharge pipe, and shut off the water lines. Then I put in some roll out shelves and converted the space to a communications/printer center. The very bottom roll out shelf provides additional pantry space so I don't have to keep heavy canned goods in the over head cabinets.

No, I ment the toilet. I flush the blank tank when it gets to the 3/4 mark. Usually happens about every 6 mos, give or take.

[Diesel-RVs] What parts would be needed to install a remote fuel filter?

My 1994 8.3 300hp Cummins has a nearly inaccessible fuel filter mounted
on the passenger side of my DP. To access the filter I must lift the
bed and the engine cover and carry wet fuel filters through coach.

I do have a fuel/water separator filter mounted near the rear bumper
which is very convenient.

What parts in addition to the fuel lines would I need to move the small
fuel filter to a more accessible position?

Thanks

They'd be THE place to go.. You might even find a few bucks, since the

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Fumoto Valve

Hi Jim.

The oil pan clearance is the only downside.

For someone who does his own oil changes it's the best thing since sliced
bread. You can change your oil anywhere as long as you have empty jugs with
you. If you never change the oil yourself theres not a benefit that I am
aware of.

There are some coaches that could have a lower than normal oil pan. Common
sense has to rule here. Most well designed coaches have no problems but
there are always exceptions so check before doing.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Fumoto Valve

Had one before and always had that nagging worry in the back of my mind.
Never bought another because of that. As I recall it did drain slower than I
liked. Others have said they were very happy with theirs. I guess it is just
a matter of choice and what you are comfortable with.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: Cumins C8.3 300 DIY oil change(speedco)

Roger,
I would venture to say that most if not all the tires Speedco has in stock are for 18 Wheelers. Those tires including the steer tires they would not wear well on a motor home. I have a friend who got stuck with some 18 wheeler tires on a used coach he purchased. He ended up chunking off bits of rubber off the foot print before he realized what was happening. Do your homework on tires designed for motor homes, make a selection, and see if Speedco sell them. Chuck B

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Cumins C8.3 300 DIY oil change

Fred,

On mine, The book calls for 24quarts but 24 quarts way overfills it. On an oil and filter change 20 quarts is about right. I have an 89 8.3 mechanical. I lost the original dipstick a few years ago on I 95 in DC so I bought a new one and marked it with a file. I drained all the oil out and put in 20 quarts including the filter and marked it. Then I put in aother 4 quarts and marked it again. Big mistake. I should have left it at the 20 quart marking or added 2 quarts at the most. I have abut 104K miles on it.

fred hengel <fjh1@sprintpcs.com> wrote:
Hi Dean,

Its not just the engine size as some coach manufactures change the size of
the oil pan.

I have a 94 Monaco Dynasty with a C 8.3 that the Cummins book calls for 22
quarts but 20 brings it to full. You have to be careful of the long oil dip
sticks as the coach manufacturer provides them and they are sometimes
mismarked. Your 95 may have a Cummins installed dipstick under the exhaust
manifold. That is the bench mark to check the accuracy of the longer dip
stick. The only way 28 quarts would fit is if the pan is far larger than the
normal RV pan on the C 8.3 To be sure check with CC.

Here is a tip. Get a Fumoto valve instead of the stock oil drain plug. You
control the flow and its easy to drain the oil into empty oil jugs with no
mess.

My measurements are reasonably accurate. I have done the oil change

What is your experience with this engine as to quantities at oil change?

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: Cumins C8.3 300 DIY oil change

Dean,
I always tell the tech how much oil the engine holds with the added statement that the oil pan on a motor home is smaller than on a truck engine. I also stand there and watch them put the oil in. If they use the oill filler hose with the dial on it, I make sure they dial in the amount of oil while I watch. Then I look at the bill before I pay. Try Speedco, they are all over the US. www.speedco.com They will let you go down in the pit and watch if you want. For $25.00 more, they will perform an engine oil anaylsis for you. I get everything done including the oil anaylsis for about $180.00 including the filter upgrade on our ISL 400 engine. Chuck B

Fred and George, thanks for the confirming info. I feel much more
competent now.

I have considered the Fumoto Valve, but always forget about it until
the next six month oil change. Will order one today.

One of the reasons my oil changes cost too much at the service shops is
they were charging me for more oil than the engine apparently holds.
Not a big deal, but still more money in my pocket.
