Re: [diesel_mercedes] AC Hose Service

Actually in that vintage Mercedes was never able to get the AC working well enough to satisfy the more demanding clients in the hotter areas of the US.  It goes back to the climate in Germany, and the mind set of the engineers and management "we don't need no stinking AC or cup holders"

Yea, ditto on your first part for me too. In the 50's and 60's as far as I knew ac was only in Cadillacs. never knew of anyone who had it., I now say bull to the dry heat thing, when its hot its hot. Up here 80 degrees is hot with low humidity, I'll still keep my ac going (to a certain point anyway) for as long as I can. Funny thing it works great in the Subaru but I dont drive that car when its hot, but the heater will almost melt the vents. I've looked at all the joints for signs of leakage,new compressor added stop leak uv dye . When it works it works good. Ahhhhhhh well. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Final Drive Thoughts

Understand Max ;

I was busy (lazy really)  and wasn't keeping an eye on things like I should have so it was dribbling out gear oil and ran almost dry , that's why it sings : poorly lubricated gears sets wear rapidly even when perfectly meshed , the SWARF is caused not only by the wear from lack of lubricant but also by the constant wear going on now in spite of my changing the oil and cleaning the magnets ~

It's going to fail in time , I'm just nursing it along as long as I can .

I have a Road Rally coming up ("The California Faultline 500 ") June 9/10 and want to drive it there but will prolly take the '82 240D instead as  I'll be on some remote Farm to Market back roads far from cell service if it dies....

Truly , the Mercedes pumpkin is a well designed and built unit ~ I'm not slowing down one bit nor driving it gentler , it's Kaputi and I know it .

Looking for a 3.07 final drive from a W123 , W116 or W126 (hint)  to scavange , clean up and install .

Well after conversing with you about the filler plugs and since I had mine out I took it to the auto parts store and got a nylon gasket that is a little too big but it screwed in good. The well versed store guy thought it should have a washer. I figured it really didnt matter much, but he gave me one to try and now its on the car.  Wow, that looks like a lot of crud in the pics. I had none in mine, no magnet tho, but it looked pretty good in the drain and all. Max

It's hard to determine quality on some items.  You can see if a forging looks good or not but you still have no idea about the metallurgy.
